Insertion of chemo port - In agony

I had the port inserted yesterday under sedation ready for chemo which starts on Friday, and it has been so so painful. Once the local had worn off the pain was intense and I was up all night trying to manage the pain. I had no sleep. Is this normal? There was the option of starting chemo right after the port was put in but I have chosen Fridays as my chemo day which is why we came home. I don't know how I would have managed if I had chemo on the same day.

  • Hi dee dee...I had a port fitted in July ready to start my chemo...I got myself all worked up about it because I wasn't being put to sleep and although it was a strange and uncomfortable feeling it dn't hurt...afterwards there was some pain around the wound site but it only lasted a day..I took paracetamol..I had chemo 3days later and was worried that the needle would hurt because of the soreness s but it was just like having a normal injection...hope your pain goes away quickly and good luck with the chemo..I've got my last one next Friday..then I can start panicking about having the port out lol...Blush

  • Hi Lloydy Thanks for replying so positively. I'm sure I'll find out tomorrow if there's a problem or if it's is just normal soreness. Congratulations on reaching the end of chemo ThumbsupHeart️

  • Hi Dee Dee - my port was uncomfortable for a few days, and I remember they didn't use it for my first chemo about a week later because it was sore. But after that I had another 15 sessions of chemo and was really glad I had it because my veins were not great and a canula always hurt. Good luck with the chemo.
