Just wondering of anyone else hasn't had any scans with their diagnosis?
Got surgery next week...

Thanks

  • Hi,

I got mammograms, ultrasound and diagnosis all on same day then booked for mastectomy a few weeks later. they said that there was no point in further scans at this point as they would be testing nodes in armpit during mastectomy surgery. I had my surgery on 12th July, so still waiting on pathology results coming back.

I think if they already have a surgery plan they won't do scans if it won't give them any new info

  • Thank you Lex. That makes a lot of sense.  They think they know where it is.

I hope you are on the mend. Wishing you all the best. Xx

  • Hello,

I had ultrasound, biopsy and mammogram at diagnosis then a CT for chest, abdo and pelvis and then an MRI of breast before I saw my surgeon to discuss surgery. I guess each hospital is different.

  • If you are worried, please give your breast cancer nurse a call at the hospital, they have your notes, and will be able to explain why a scan has not been booked, I feel sure you are being look after.

Wishing you lots of luck with your surgery, health and happiness going forward

  • Thank you.  That's the hard thing isn't it?  To realise that it's so individual.  X

    • Thank you.  That's a good idea.  She did say it's not routine for some stages. So i expect it's very dependent on whether they feel they have the full picture.  X
  • Hi  , my case followed a similar pattern to   - mammogram, ultrasound, biopsies, told there and then that they were sure it was cancer. Results of biopsies a couple of weeks later, when op was discussed. No other scans. Surgery date a few weeks after that, when they evicted the beast and sampled the sentinel nodes. These were clear so then oncology appointment, hormone therapy and radiotherapy. I’ve not had any other scans apart from a dexa scan to check bone density because I’m on Anastrozole which can thin the bones. I have these scans every 2 years.
It can be very worrying when you hear of other folk having scans and tests. Always feel you can ask the team about your treatment, don’t worry in silence. My own ‘take’ on it all is that they only do scans if it is necessary for each particular case.
Good luck with your op! Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Thank you. That really explains a lot and was what i was thinking.  Had a chat with someone who is out the other side. They expressed utter amazement that i hadn't had a scan and i think it made question too much.

I think I'll be more settled post surgery. But getting nervous.

  • Hi, I am another one who hasn’t had any scan. Had ultrasound and biopsy, mammogram and diagnosis at the same appointment. Surgery, sentinel node biopsy , all clear and clear margins. Now having to have chemo as final histology showed HER2 to be positive.

  • Was the first HER2 negative  did they retest?

Hope the chemo goes well and you don't feel too ill. Xx
