Hi, I'm due to start radiotherapy in a few weeks and they mentioned about having to hold your breath during it. My problem is I can't hold my breath very long. I know adjustments can be made if I can't hold my breath but I was wondering what other people's experiences were. Thanks for any advice or tips.

  • Hi Vicman31

I had to hold my breath during radio and was worried that I wouldn’t be able too. I started practising at home  for 10 secs and then 15 , 20 etc untill I could do a minute I was surprised that you really don’t have to hold your breath that long whilst having radio. Don’t worry the staff are great and they will make adjustments if you really can’t manage it !! Good luck

  • Hi Vicman31 welcome to the forum. As far as I am aware this is only if the Breast Cancer is on the left side, is that where yours is?

  • Yes that is correct it helps move the heart over .

  • Thank you for your reply

  • Yes it was on the left

  • Morning

I opted for free breathing as I was worried I couldn't hold my breath for 30 seconds. Radiologist was OK with it, they just adapt it.

  • Honestly you don’t need to breath in that deeply, I found it easier to close my eyes once I was in the middle of the screen and the time went really quickly.

  • Dear Vicman,

So much going on for you at the moment, I also had a few sleepless nights worrying about this, it going to be fine some hospital now have a sheld which they can use, otherwise they will get round it, please push this to one side at the moment.

Wishing you all the best with your treatment, drink plenty of water, and take one day at a time.

with the biggest hugs Tili x

  • Glad I am not the only one, this is making me very tearful and worried too. I have not been told about any adjustments by any staff I have seen at 2 planning appointments. My right arm keeps going dead whilst holding the bar during these sessions ( though my chiropractor says this arm is compensating due to surgery on the other side).

  • Thanks for your reply. My oncologist suggested practicing holding my breath to gradually build it up to approx 30 seconds as said I wouldn't be required to hold for longer than that. I'm just worried as during previous scans I struggled. She did say adjustments could be made if necessary but holding breath was better.
