Hello

im 45 and felt a large lump in my breast. Yesterday I had 2 mammograms and an ultrasound to which they confirmed that it was cancer. The doctor said it is between 2-3 cm but I think I heard her say 21mm by 16mm.
they took a biopsy (which I found very painful) and I have to wait 2 weeks. The waiting from first finding the lump is so hard and I just keep expecting the worst!! They did say they are confident it is confined to the breast though.

So I’m worried about the grading. Does it get graded by size or what they find in the biopsy results?
I have 2 boys (13 & 15) and it broke my heart to tell them.
Im really trying to be strong but the worry is overpowering.
Any advice on grading will be great!

  • I had a mammogram in 22 and was diagnosed with grade 3 in 23. Just bad luck I guess. I’m half way through chemo and my oncologist said the mass has reduced considerably so looking towards a mastectomy in April.

It did say 3/1000 women are diagnosed between mammograms. Apparently it’s called ‘interval cancer’

  • Hi I'm.going through similar at the moment. I went to the breast clinic for what I thought might be a cyst. When I arrived I had 3 mammograms 8 biopsies on 3 lumps I only thought I had a small one and 3 markers placed in them both and 2 ultrasounds

When I saw the consultant straight after she garded me as a 4 based on all the reports and told me she was really concerned about an 8cm lump in my right breast. what does that mean? I thought u had to wait for the biopsy results to be diagnosed with cancer.

I have since had a contrast ct on my chest and the consultants had a MDT mtg today regarding my biopsies there is an MDT mtg tmoro regarding my CT not sure why they are separate and I've been asked to see the consultant tmoro at 1 30pm. I'm extremely worried now.

Hi, I'm sorry to read about your diagnosis. I had 2 mammograms and an ultrasound and 3 biopsies taken yesterday. My consultant couldn't tell me anything but is concerned and I have an MRI on Thursday. I have a 12 year old Daughter and am fearing the worst and am absolutely petrified. Here if you need a vent x

I did too, I wasn't aware it could be diagnosed before results ?

  • So sorry you find yourself here.

You’re right, they can’t definitively diagnose without the biopsy results. But they do have a really, really good idea as they do it day in, day out.

Whenever you’re examined my understanding is that you are graded P (palpable), U (ultrasound), M (mammogram) 1,2,3, 4 or 5

1 being normal breast tissue, 2 benign not cancer, 3 uncertain but probably benign, 4 suspicious and possibly cancer , and 5 cancer

I was 4 on my ultrasound and, unsursprisingly, they were right.

    Sending you a hug xx

  • Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I am 50 and was diagnosed in November. If confined to the breast it's usually stage 0 or 1. Mine was 49mm but all was removed in the op on 22nd December. I also had flap surgery at the same time. They take fat from under the arm area and put into the breast. It's a slight reconstruction. Although it was quite large it hadn't spread to lymph nodes which was a relief. No chemo is needed.just radiotherapy and hormone tablets. Take each day at a time, and we are here if you need us. This group has been a great help for me. Even if just to get some reassurance that I wasn't going mad sometimes. I hope the wait for you isn't too long, and that soon you will be on the other side of it xx
