Another cancer

Feeling pretty down today. I got my biopsy results yesterday, and they showed the suspicious area found on my MRI scan is in fact another cancer. Now there are two to deal with, I’ve been told I can’t have a lumpectomy, I need a mastectomy and sentinel node biopsy. Been referred urgently to surgeon to discuss. Trying to see the positives (the second cancer is relatively small and lower grade) but it’s obviously not the news I was hoping for. How did others cope with setbacks? xx

  • Hi Rosie12,  thanks for the kind words and I never underestimate the power of women.  We are strong and capable even in our dark times. I so agree about not feeling in control when dealing with cancer.  It is also hard for me to make decisions without knowing all the details and that was hard for me to overcome during this time.  You will be able to handle it and as my breast surgeon said he was always amazed at the strength of his patients.  Heart
Keep in touch and definitely make sure they monitor other breast too.  I had dense breasts too so think that is why surgeon ordered MRI’s on me.

  • Thanks Barb, those are wise words Heart️ I think we have a rather similar approach. I also like to have all the facts before making decisions, but I recognise that’s not always possible with cancer. Therefore to help me feel prepared, I’m doing some reading around the particular reconstruction they have in mind for me before I meet the surgeon on Friday. Hopefully this will help me feel prepared and able to ask the right questions, rather than feeling overwhelmed and blinded by all the medical terminology. Xx

  • Good idea Rosie,  I always bring my list of questions with me to every visit too.  I think the Dr.s like it as it gives them a chance to explain it more thoroughly.  Some people don’t like all the details but I don’t want surprises.  If you don’t understand what the Doctor is saying just tell him to put it in simpler terms which is the best way to communicate to a patient anyway.  Pictures help too.  Have a good visit and you are doing all you can right now.
