Hemorrhoids!!! At the end of my tether

Hi everybody, not sure if anyone can relate but I really don’t know what to do and I’m just walking around the house feeling so uncomfortable. I had a hemmorhoid that for for all these years hadn’t bothered me. I started EC Chemo last week and for a few days I’ve been so constipated it’s unreal and feel like I have a football coming out (apologies for graphics) Epsom salt looks good but then I’m getting paranoid about buying it. My diet is good and I’m drinking water but unfortunately it’s giving me issues. If anyone can shed any light please!! X

  • Hi Sia43, sorry to hear you are having issues with constipation and haemorrhoids. Epsom salts in a warm bath is soothing, I’ve used it because I had thrush after antibiotics. I too have haemorrhoids but have been lucky and not suffered when I had EC. For constipation I take sensoft which I find works really well. Have you tried anusol ? That’s normally good too. Whilst it doesn’t help with constipation it’s good for the haemorrhoids. You can get suppository or cream. Just double check with your breast care nurse it’s ok to use whilst on chemo. I check everything with my nurse just incase.
Drinking at least 2l of water a day too plus some high fibre foods but not too much in one go as that too can counter the effect and cause constipation I read somewhere.
Fingers crossed you get some relief quickly and wishing you all the best for the rest of your journey.

  • Oh poor you - on top of everything else dealing with this. My immediate thoughts are that it would be best to speak to someone in your medical team - maybe the breast care nurse being the first port of call. They will be so experienced in dealing with situations like this and will advise the best treatment that doesn't interfere with your EC meds. I think dealing with it early doors is important so that you stay as well as possible in body and mind!

Meanwhile what can you do to distract yourself? Focussing on pain and discomfort is research known to increase pain and discomfort as it feeds the threat in the brain. Easier said than done i know but if you can find a way of soothing and resting yourself - lay on side and watch a download for example?, it will ease the pressure on the H and divert your focus away from it.

I’m on EC too - had 2 rounds. I assume you have a few more to go so nip in bud asap.

    Sending positive vibes to you.

  • Hi   I had EC x 6 after onco decided because of previous bowel op she wouldn’t prescribe Docetaxel .

I was concerned coming off bowel med but for me it worked well and rather than constipation I went normally . Yes I know this doesn’t help you except it was the chemo unit staff who were able to answer queries .
If I was you ring them to discuss problems they have heard it all and in my experience of various SE have a magic drug cupboard Joy Something like dulcoease to soften the stool might be ok but you need to check with them or onco . Certainly as said previously up your fluid intake EC is very dehydrating .

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

  • Hi JPH

100 percent need to nip it in the bud now!!! My GP just called and said Anusol is fine and prescribed Movacol too so I’m relieved. Honestly this pile never bothered me up until now Weary

Thank you and all the best xx

  • Thank you Louise. Awful isn’t it xx

  • You have a plan - everything feels better when there is a bit of a plan!

  • Hi Margaret, thank you. I’m trying to keep up the fluids and fibre but I guess as you say EC is extremely dehydrating. Thankfully my GP has shed some light. Thank you so much xxx

  • Absolutely it does!!
