Hi, Just wanted to ask how long people waiting after surgery till they started radiotherapy or even got their first appointment with oncologist.
I'm 5 weeks post surgery, was told they didn't get clear margins but I would get radiotherapy and boost sessions which I suppose is better than more surgery (although I keep overthinking this). I spoke to bcn yesterday asking when my oncology appointment would be and she said a couple of weeks yet, which means I'll be 7 weeks post op. Is this a long time? I suppose I'm panicked because I feel like I'm at a stand still with nothing happening but my overactive brain questioning everything.

I'm having chemo after surgery so may be different but I was 7weeks post op before seeing the oncologist and starting chemo today 10 days later x
Hi. I was told it was between 8 and 12 weeks to start radiotherapy after surgery if it is needed. They can delay the star if needed without any difference to long term results. It is important surgery site is completely healed first.
As with all of this the waiting is horrid. X
Thank you both for replying, think im having a mega wobbly now my weeks aren't filled with appointments and tests and I've far too much time to think. Its reassuring to know delayed treatment won't effect outcome. I suppose with the oncology appointment and planning session still to do it probably will be about 12 weeks till radiotherapy will start.
Tricia1919 good luck with your first chemo today.
X
Hi, the waiting is difficult & like you say let's your brain start over thinking things
It was 12 weeks until my radiotherapy started, my hospital had that as the latest target for me after my mastectomy. I saw the oncologist about 4 weeks before to discuss it fully & consent & then planning session a couple of weeks before it started. Like someone else said they have to make sure any surgery scars are healed as radiotherapy stops that process.
I can remember how frustrating it was waiting but try & use the time to recover & prepare for the next stage
Good luck, best wishes with your treatment x
Hi Franny. My oncologist appointment was almost five weeks after surgery. I have just had my planning meeting with radiotherapists and start radiotherapy in two weeks time, which will be 9 weeks from op. I think it is difficult to compare because all areas are different. I am under Bath in Somerset and they seem pretty efficient. My planning meeting today was at private hospital, which NHS are using. I found it difficult waiting for dates and appointments but now I have my radiotherapy dates I feel much better. Hope you hear soon.

Hi Franny38. I started radiotherapy 12 weeks post operation. I had 19 sessions in total. The waiting is definitely the worst part. Once the treatment starts, you will just go with the flow. In the meantime, rest up lots, concentrate on healing up and getting yourself fully recovered from surgery. Oh...and do not visit Mr Google...as tempting as it might be, it will do your head in and most of what is on there is total balderdash!
Evajean wow your area seem very efficient, im in Essex and my radiotherapy will be in North London I'll blame that on the delay. I'm glad you are feeling better now you have your dates, its so much better when you know the plan. Good luck with your radiotherapy.
Dicha I definitely need to stay off Google that's for sure. Thank you for your advice, im going to just concentrate on recovering and preparing myself for the next stage.
Big hugs x
Hi Franny. Yes I think I am lucky living in this area. My sister and brother live in Midlands and very different story there. As they say it is a post code lottery which is totally wrong. We have great surgery and can get appointments fairly easily. My sister is 84 and cannot even get through on phone let alone get appointment. When she tries again later in the day she is told all appointments gone please try again tomorrow. So wrong. Don’t be alarmed about having the wobbles, it happens to us all.
