Hello I am due for breast conserving surgery and targeted lymph node axillary dissection in June following 6 cycles of TCHP.
I had a 20mm mass reduced to 11mm non-mass on MRI after cycle 4 and 1 lymph node affected, both have marker clips in situ.
My letter says for radiofrequency (RF) guided local excision with axillary RF tag as well as breast!
Can anyone explain what this is and how it may look afterwards?
I thought the original marker clips would point out the affected areas?
I had a too brief discussion with the surgeon and will ask more at my pre op assessment but wondered if anyone can advise from their experiences? Thank you
Hi Alemie11, think its just the method that the surgeon uses to find and take out your mass and margin, using the markers you already have in place ie the RF guidance is to find the markers. Same with the lymph node. How it may look afterwards depends on the location of your mass, as well as its size when removed. Its something to ask at your pre-op. If it helps, my incision was in the same area as they used for biopsy/marker insertion. The incision was quite small (2.5/3 cm) and is very neat.. The lymph node incision was a bit longer and is more of an arc under my arm pit. My experience is don't judge the appearance by how it looks in the first couple of weeks - swelling and bruising caused my nipple to point downwards, there was a noticable dent below the mass incision point and both scars were quite dark and raised to begin with. 3 months later and the nipple is normal, the dent much less noticable and the scars are flat and not nearly so dark. I'd also add that you should follow their advice about keeping dressings on, as it really helps healing. Good luck with your pre-op and operation.
Hi
I think they are talking about using a device called a Magseed. It’s a small marker inserted before surgery which emits a signal when the surgeon passes their probe over it.It gives better localisation for small tumours.Google Magseed and it will tell you how it works. There are probably other brands available but the theory is the same.
I had it done June last year.Insertion was the day before the op and painless .
My lumpectomy and axillary scars are barely noticeable now as the surgeon made the incision around my areole. The node scar was annoying for a while as it seemed to catch on my clothes but all good now.
Good luck
