Herceptin vs Kadcyla

I’m hoping to get some advice on the next stage of my treatment.
I was diagnosed with HER+ breast cancer last May. I had 7 rounds of chemo, which totally got rid of the tumour. I then had a lumpectomy and 4 lymph nodes removed. 2 lymph nodes had residual disease so I then had a full clearance.

Tomorrow I begin my 15 sessions of radiotherapy. After this I have been advised I will be switching from herceptin to Kadcyla.

Part of me feels really apprehensive as the herceptin doesn’t give me any side effects at all and I’m planning a phased return to work. I’m finally starting  to feel like a normal person again. I’ve read about Kadcyla and I know it is going to be much harsher. I feel like I’m being stupid for turning down what I’ve been told is a better drug, but then I feel like Kadcyla will be a massive backwards step.

Please can you share your experiences of Kadcyla to help me make a more informed decision. There really isn’t great deal of information about it.

Thank you xx

  • yes you can colour your hair. I waited about 4 to 5 months had a good consultation with my stylist as I wanted to bleach my hair.  Now I colour it my self as it doesn't need to be bleached . While my hair is growing back I've been having fun with different colours. If you have anymore questions please ask.

You’ve got no idea how much you’ve helped me. Thank you so much x

  • Hi Violet78, I've only had 2 Kadcyla's so far. I found the first was tougher going than I expected and as a result have paused any discussion with work until I've got the measure of it more. Am pleased to say that I'm feeling much better on this second round and have heard a few other ladies say they found the first the hardest. My first was just 2 weeks after radiotherapy, so I was really at my peak of side effects from that so it probably wasn't the best starting point! Hope you can see the way forward, xx

My first one is going to be a week after radiotherapy so I’ll make sure I bare that in mind. Thank you Blush

  • Hi Violet - when I read your initial post it could have been me writing it! I felt exactly the same as you.  I’m about to have cycle 8 of Kadcyla and agree with the majority of what everyone is saying. A breeze compared to chemo, I have shellac, hair continues to grow, have used vegetable colour for now to cover greys.  But I can’t deny I’m finding it tough.  Totally doable but Vv tired, still feeling far away from myself, going back to work on phased return in a few months and tempted to go back to Herceptin as know easier to cope with.  However I think if bloods continue to allow us to have it, we should continue to finish line as if cancer came back, I know I’d always be wandering ‘what if’ hope that helps xxxx

  • How long did it take for your hair to grow back in please?

  • Is kadcyla definitely easier than chemo? As I had the worst time on Herceptin and dreading going on to this in a couple of weeks thank you

  • Hi

It’s defo easier than the chemo does have some ups and downs and can feel never ending I have just had no 10. It doesn’t seem to affect your hair so should grow back as normal. Kadcyla percentage wise is better than herceptin for recurrence rate. It’s worth trying it

  • I’ve just finished my 14th Kadcyla. It is so much easier in so many ways than full chemo. The first one was tough, I had a dose reduction for doses 2-6 and then back up to 100%. The first few days I felt rough and then it’s just an overall feeling of fatigue.
my top tips- look after your gut health. Lots of pre and post biotics and digestive support.
try and get outside and do some gentle exercise. Best of luck

  • Thank you so much, my hair has just started growing back in and was dreading it falling out again
