Herceptin vs Kadcyla

I’m hoping to get some advice on the next stage of my treatment.
I was diagnosed with HER+ breast cancer last May. I had 7 rounds of chemo, which totally got rid of the tumour. I then had a lumpectomy and 4 lymph nodes removed. 2 lymph nodes had residual disease so I then had a full clearance.

Tomorrow I begin my 15 sessions of radiotherapy. After this I have been advised I will be switching from herceptin to Kadcyla.

Part of me feels really apprehensive as the herceptin doesn’t give me any side effects at all and I’m planning a phased return to work. I’m finally starting  to feel like a normal person again. I’ve read about Kadcyla and I know it is going to be much harsher. I feel like I’m being stupid for turning down what I’ve been told is a better drug, but then I feel like Kadcyla will be a massive backwards step.

Please can you share your experiences of Kadcyla to help me make a more informed decision. There really isn’t great deal of information about it.

Thank you xx

  • Hi violet, I’m due my 10th kadcyla next week. It’s easier than past chemo. It has though given me slight neuropathy in both feet which I’m on amitryptilline for. I’m on phased return at work, went back 4 weeks ago. Some tiredness few days after infusion but know my limits. I finish on 8 th June and has flown in, and to think back as to how you feel now I can’t believe it’s nearly complete. It’s not much harsher for me, just more of a nuisance now but I’m determined to go for the 14 prescribed. Some ladies need to stop for different reasons but still have good protection. Good luck and you will maybe be giving good advice to someone else before long x

Thank you so much for the information. I’m just trying to read as much as I can so that I can make an informed decision. Did you lose any hair with it? I know that’s not the most important thing but I just want to be prepared!

  • No hair loss at all x

  • Hi Violet

I was put on Kadcyla for 14 rounds but only managed 11 as it was affecting my liver function but apart from that I had no other problems apart from a bit of tiredness,  it's a breeze compared to my other chemo, also no hair loss.

if you have any questions please ask.

Thank you Carolyn. Were you able to drink alcohol at all and could you have your nails gelled? It’s really difficult to find a great deal of information in it, apart from other peoples own experiences!

  • I got my nails done with shellac at weekend and so nice. In fact nurse at clinic said I could too. Alcohol I don’t touch until about 2 weeks after the infusion. Then it’s maybe 2 glasses of wine on the Saturday or Sunday

  • Hi violet's

yes I drank alcohol on Kadcyla in moderation of course but went back to living a normal life whatever that is, just made sure I was a bit more vigilant and thought about what I was doing more.

Last question! Were you able to colour your hair? It’s over six months since I finished chemo but I didn’t know if I should wait longer.
