Hi everyone,
I hoping someone can help, is it normal for my scalp to hurt when my chemo has stopped (1.11.21) and my hair is regrowing? It is only a small area on my crown that is painful and the hair growing back there is growing slower, my family have also told me it seems to be a different texture to the rest....
I feel like I want to pull the individual hairs out of that area to make it feel better....
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated xxx
Hi Laura
I finished chemo last March and still get Herceptin & pertuzumab every three weeks. Hair has been a bit slow growing back, but is getting there. It is a completely different texture and colour compared to before. I was dark blonde and it came in black and white. I have had it coloured by my hairdresser of 20ish years, so she is very familiar with my hair. She said that the back of of my head hair is completely different texture and colour to the sides and top. So much so that she and the other colourist whom also knows me, made up a different mixture to do the colour there and combed it through the rest 5min before washing it off. Result is good and I feel more like myself when I pass a mirror.
I do remember tenderness when it was growing back, especially if anything touched or pressed the hairs e.g. Hats, pillows cushions.
I just persevered with it and didn't pull any out. I do remember taking paracetamol (rare for me) and being really surprised that this helped. We just need to do whatever we can to help us get by, at these times.
Wishing you all the best

I am as bald as a coot but still on chemo, my 5th session on Thursday. Big shock finding my hair in the shower so decided to have it all shaved off. Do I regret that now,, yes and no as It's just not a good look on me at all! I have had little prickles coming through though so now I feel really sorry for bald men (and women!) and hedgehogs when their little prickles grow in. Bit like my budgies when their 'pinnies' are growing back after moulting. Ho hum, It's not too bad now it's cold and on the rare occasion I venture out I wear a woolly hat but I'm not looking forward to spring (not to mention summer) as I'm not sure how long my treatment and regrowth will be. Some of us look better with very short hair, I'm not one of them but wishing you all the best with your regrowth.
Hi Laura
i had my last chemo at the end of January last year and my last treatment of herceptin & pertuzumab at the end of November. I cold capped during chemo and kept around 60% of my hair although I think I still lost some more in the first few months after chemo but at the same time my new hair was growing in so I think it was my old hair that I lost.
I too suffered from quite a painful scalp at times. Some days worse than others. Even now it can be a bit uncomfortable and my hair is now about 2 to 3 inches long.
I had shoulder length straight hair before. It is now quite course in places, curly and kinks in places, so a right mixture of textures. I had a lot of white hair before which I dyed the roots every few weeks and it is growing in with a similar mix of white and dark brown so I currently do my roots every 4 or 5 weeks as I think it is slower growing probably due to the herceptin treatment. Now I have finished that I am hoping it speeds up a bit.
bare with it, the pain will ease off in time. I am just so relieved to see it growing as you will likely be too. Good luck x
