Bisphosphonate infusion

After my breast cancer diagnosis last year,I also discovered that I had osteoporosis (lucky me)

I was advised it would be beneficial to have Bisphosphonate infusions every 6 months for 3 years to stop the spread to my bones if I am unlucky enough for the cancer to return.
I had my first infusion on Tuesday of last week and it absolutely knocked me sideways. I had flu like symptoms, shivers, shakes, achey bones, nausea… those symptoms have now dissipated but I’m left with sore and swollen joints on my fingers and toes…which came on this morning.  I’m hoping it’s temporary but it’s really taken me by surprise. I literally woke up with old lady hands and one of my fingers has bent slightly at the joint…

I'm taking paracetamol and ibuprofen .

Has anyone else ever experienced this please?
thanks in advance for any replies x

  • Hi Jacster

Apart from mild flu like symptoms the day after the two infusions I've so far and I haven't experienced the rest of the symptoms you've described.

    Best wishes

  • Hi, my first one knocked me for 6, seriously worse than chemo.  The subsequent ones have given me no side effects whatsoever!  Weird, but true.  Best wishes

  • Hi Jacster

I felt like I had flu, whole body aching especially my joints after my first infusion but the second one was not as bad. I will also have infusion for three years every 6 months. I’m still suffering from joint pains on my shoulders, knees, fingers and feet. My right fingers except the little one feel very tight at night and early morning. They are not swollen but the pain is always there.

I hope you feel better soon.

  • Hi

had my first one last week

chills/ flu symptoms for 2 days then passed. But actually I have felt tired but low and slightly more achey all week since.
    melts hope it all passes!!

  • Hi Jacster, I have had two so far first one had leg pain couldn't walk properly for about a week next one just bad shoulder pain not sure if from the infusion or my hormone tablet I'm on . Hope you get on better

  • Thanks for the responses everyone and for sharing your experiences. It got worse. My fingers started to blister and I ended up having to go to the hospital to get an out of hours GP appt. I’m now on antibiotics and steroid cream and feeling pretty sorry for myself. It’s an adverse reaction apparently. So, I won’t be able to have it again (not that I want to!)
The biggest concern was the blisters were on my compromised side and there was concern over possible lymphadema if it got worse.

    I so regret having it!

  • I totally emphasise with you xx

I had my first one on Monday 18th November. 12 hours after I woke with aching bones. It gradually got worse in my right hip, thigh, groin and the small of my back, pain killers didn't touch it. I've had 4 children, 2 were home births without pain relief, I sooner give birth to quads than have the pain I had in my back again.

Every bone in my body either ached or was excruciatingly painful, even my eye sockets ached. Only thing that hasn't hurt was my jaw.

At one point I  couldn't move my left hip, hubby wanted to get an ambulance, he couldnt drive as he just had an eye operation, I refused.

2 days later I woke with painful eyeballs, which became swollen and bloodshot, with shooting pains in change of light.

It's taken a good week before I've started to feel better.  As of today 12 days on, I still have a painful right hip and thigh, twinges in my back and now developing sore knuckles.

I shall be discussing it with my oncologist on Tuesday when I have my 6 week follow up after my last radiotherapy.

I have a high pain threshold and all this took me by surprise.

Edit to add, I have osteopenia which why I'm having the infusions

  • Oh dear Sue, I’m so sorry to read about your story too.
    it’s horrible isn’t it.
My fingers still ache so much and they sore around the knuckles. I won’t be having it again. I was doing great and now I’m miserable.
I have osteoporosis (picked up through my DEXA scan a few months ago)

I have asked the consultant to contact me to discuss what happened, my GP has marked my record as adverse reaction to Zoledronic Acid.

    How are your symptoms now?

  • I’ve had two and had severe pain in the hand I had it in a week after the infusion. I couldn’t really use the hand for two weeks. Mentioned it to the breast care nurse and the  team in which they said they’d never heard of that rreaction but to try having it further up the arm next time ?? We shall see
