Hi all I’m so scared of having a picc line and starting chemotherapy next week, 8 cycles. Once every 3 weeks. Any advice is most welcome. My babies are keeping me going sorry for sounding so silly….
Hi Storm Rain, I hope you're ok. Daughter is almost through her chemo now and is very glad she had a picc line. She said having it fitted wasn't nearly as bad as she expected and it has made chemo and the endless blood tests so much easier. She did buy a variety of picc line covers but actually gets on much better with the ones the hospital provide - and they give you a new one each time you have chemo or have your weekly flush.
Daughter did try cold capping but when she had lost 90% of her hair after three chemo sessions, she decided to stop. She coped well with the discomfort of the cap but, once her hair was almost all gone, could see no point in the extra 2-3 hours we had to be there when she used it.
It's all very new and scary but you will find a way to get through it - one day at a time. Sending very best wishes and a virtual hug. x
Hi cherry2 thank you so much for replying, I’m so glad the picc line is going well, I’m so glad she’s nearly towards the end, everything you have said has really been helpful. I wish her all the best with her treatments, speedy recovery as well. Thank you so much for your kind words

Hello I was really apprehensive about having the PICC line fitted but can honestly say it was painless with the local anaesthetic, slight pushing but that’s all. I had chemotherapy this afternoon, it was much easier with the PICC. I agree it’s a faff having to have yet another appt , I’m 45 mins on a good day from the hospital but as luck would have it a mobile unit is at a Tesco superstore once a week and they will flush the line for me. I was given a prescription for the shower cover. . My arm is a bit sore around the line which I will keep an eye on , the nurse today felt it was ok. Good luck with your treatment .
Thank you so much, hope you’re feeling ok, is it where they would usually take bloods from? All the best with your treatments as well.
Yes I had bloods taken from the PICC after it was fitted on 2/1, much easier. I have rubbish veins and was told they wouldn’t last the 6 months of chemo. I’ve found that the things I’ve been really anxious about have been absolutely fine in the end. I made sure I told the Dr fitting the PICC that I was nervous, he was lovely. It didn’t take that long to be fitted . Hope this helps, best wishes to you
So pleased to hear your daughter is almost finished. Thanks for all your comments.
I’m reassured to hear that it wasn’t painful to fit the PICC line as I’ve been worried.
That’s helpful to hear about the PICC line covers - Hopefully I’ll find these enough but Ive just found out that I also have a prescription to take to my GP for a waterproof cover so that might be useful too.
Im not cold capping - I hate having anything pressing on my head, takes extra time and doesn’t always work but I hear that hair can grow back more quickly and thicker with cold capping so I guess its individual preference.
Hope all continues to go well for you and your daughter ️
Baby’s footprint how lovely! Having a small curly head and a snuggly little boy has really made me feel more positive about getting through.
My ECG is Monday then PICC line is being fitted just prior to chemo on 11th. When are yours?
Good luck with the party and by next Thurs we’ll be one session down
