Hi all I’m so scared of having a picc line and starting chemotherapy next week, 8 cycles. Once every 3 weeks. Any advice is most welcome. My babies are keeping me goingSee no evil sorry for sounding so silly….See no evil

  • Il definitely give the cold cap a try, thank you so much, all the best to you aswell. 2024 will definitely be your year Hearts

  • Hiya ,I had PICC line fitted same day as my first chemo 5 Oct ,I have 5th chemo tomorrow so over halfway now .The fitting of picc line was painless ,just had to lie down 15 mins listening to music and chatting with the ladies doing it .I must admit I thought it looked weird having a tube hanging out of your arm but I am pretty much used to it now .They had some cloth covers that I could pick from that were made by a lady and she  just asks for a charity donation but to be honest they were useless as too loose and ended up round my wrist! They also gave me a Limbo waterproof cover to use in the shower. I bought some PICC covers from Annabandana, but at my first appointment the next week for checking the picc line ,they put on a bandage type tubigrip and i find it easier just leaving that one on.The picc line needs cleaning and flushing through weekly .It gets done when I have chemo ,and the next 2 weeks I have it done at a small hospital only 15mins away so I can drive there and back within the hour .

My veins have always been useless for blood tests or canulas, so this does make it easier than being pulled around each time trying to find any suitable vein

  • Thanks for the update Stormrain

Ill check when I have my pre assessment call on Fri if the district nurse will visit for PICC line flush. Also if they provide a cover.
There’s so much to plan - now chemo mittens. Are they to preserve your nails? Do you need something for feet too? I’ve heard that painting your nails a dark colour might be helpful.

I’ve just bought detangling spray as my hair is already brittle after a bad session with my GHDs! I’m going to ask my granddaughter (she has very curly hair) if I can try hers too as I think it might be better. Also bought a silk pillowcase so I’m trying that tonight.

The list gets longer and longer - it helps to fill the waiting time though and feeling a bit more in control. Hope you’re doing ok - keep focussing on your lovely children xx

  • Good morning KazaWave gosh so much to remember, I have no idea why mittens were recommended but I’m assuming it is to do with that. I saw a set on Amazon it’s purple it includes mittens for hands and feet. Thank you for reminding me about the pillow case will look on line. I’m thinking maybe it’s best we start treatment see how we get on. Iv heard baby shampoo is meant to be good aswell.

iv got my daughters birthday party on Saturday, a lovely ceramic place. She’s back at school today, baby is recovering from her 1year jabs. Just trying to not to over think things. This group has beSee no evil so helpful, really helps especially when your mind goes through over drive in the night. I wish you all the best aswell and please do keep me posted how you get on.  Xxx part of me just wants to stSee no evilt nowSee no evil

  • Thought I’d clear up the mittens, I believe they will be for potential neuropathy in your hands and feet. They usually require ice packs in as apparently the cold can stop the naturopathy. I didn’t suffer with this at all so perhaps see how you go before buying these!

also the PICC line covers, I found they all kept falling down so just used tube bandages on mine in the end!

I found a sleep cap the best, the reason being if you start losing hair, it’s slightly less upsetting if it’s not all over your pillow and in your bed.

    good luck to you all

  • Morning Storm rain

Ive just had the pre treatment phone call which has answered some of my queries  I’ll be going back between treatments for bloods and to have my PICC line flushed  Apparently I should have had a form to take to my GP for a prescription for a PICC line cover so I’ll get that on Monday now

She said no need for chemo mittens so I’ll wait and see. There’s a drop in centre at the house which offers relaxation, homeopathy and advice so I’ll call in there on Monday

I also can get a voucher for a wig apparently so that’s another thing to tick off the list. As you say I’ll be glad to start now and stop the uncertainty.

Have a wonderful time at your daughter’s birthday party - what a special day! I’m looking after my 2 year old grandson today which makes the time fly

Good luck for next week and we’ll be in touch to compare notes  xxx

  • Thank you.
Good advice about the PICC line cover.

I have a sleep cap already so I’ll try that as losing hair is one of my biggest concerns.

  • Aww how lovely, hope you had a lovely day, yes it’s so confusing when people say different things, I think il also just see how it goes. Thank you, looking forward to getting the baby’s footprints done as well, when are you having the picc line done? Have you had an echo done? I’m going to be going to get that done. Will get through it Muscle

  • Yes definitely will be in touch. Xxx try and enjoy the weekend, hopefully we can say one session is complete next week.
