I know this is a personal choice, but this is something that I have been thinking about.
I'm due to start chemo in a couple of weeks, and whilst I'm planning on cold capping, I'm aware that I may still lose the majority / all of my hair. If that happens I have decided that I will shave my head, but I'm not sure as to whether to wig or to simply rock the bald look with pride! I know that when the reality of this hits, I might change my mind, but I was just wondering what other people's experience of this has been?
I'm also not very girly and have no make-up experience, so I'm not looking forward to losing my eye-brows as drawing them on would not be an option if I want to look vaguely human! I think the only positive is that I will finally lose the chin hairs! ;)
Any comments / advice greatly appreciated.
Hiya. I started my chemo journey in August. Initially I was going to wear a wig and also invested in a lot of hats from Amazon ( they are also a popular gift from family and friends ). I elected to not use the cold cap, and it eventually got to the stage where my hair loss became obvious, so I made an appointment at the hairdressers and my husband shaved it all off under supervision. I had always said that I wasn't bothered about losing my hair, but I cried. I started off wearing a hat, then decided, 'stuff it (or words to that effect), I'm going to rock the bald look', and I love it. I do it with pride. I get a few looks, but really nothing. I've been mistaken for a man only once when going to the loo, but I'm not bothered. Somehow I still have my eyebrows (just) and eyelashes.
Own it, you'll love it
Hi there! I didn’t bother with cold cap as I’m part West Indian and it doesn’t work with our follicles! Quite liked having no hair, wash n go! Bought a hideous wig on line from USA, even the dog ran away when I put it on! I was supposed to look like Halle Berry, looked like a down n out tramp! Found a lovely lady who brought me wigs and I lived in mine for months. Hair is growing back but much thinner and took ages to grow at the front so ended up with a mullet! I laugh as my friends all take the mick but I’m cool with it…went to dinner at a friends hoyse with the girls recently and over painted my eyebrows, lipstick and rouge and wore my wig, which was sitting on top of my new growth….we all had a good laugh! Only way to get through life! I wish you well!! Xx
i know some people can rock bald i am not one., so after surgery i bought a nice wig (expensivish), i have three now, the nice one i can wear alone to restaurants or events, one i wear with hats to the shop and one what was i thinking? lol
in the end i will donate the two cheaper ones i got on Amazon, but may keep the nice one for a bit
in the house i wear caps or nothing, while i am not girlie girl the hair loss is devastating at least to me, i have a hard time looking in the mirror and just finishing chemo its going to be awhile before i have hair, and ig also works to keep ones head warm in winter
Yes - I'm finding the world of wigs quite a minefield! If you don't mind me asking (and feel free to ignore if you do!) roughly how much was your better wig? I'm trying to get a feel of how much a decent one might set me back, because there are so many out there and they are all different prices.
Thanks for sharing your experience with me - I love the mental image of the dog running away...made me giggle!
i bought a raquel welch one for about £240 (lucked out as it was on sale, look around if u find one u like), have had compliments on it from people in shops and restaurants, a woman at a dept store said i love your hair colour and cut, i told her she could buy it,she was taken aback a bit
also my mom was very impressed with its looks and a regular server said she liked my new cut and colour
i got mine at simplywigs, they have some reasonable (i think) prices,i was willing to spend because it’s going to be even now, many months before i have hair enough to cut (hugs)
Hi Loobylue I cold capped and lost about 70% of my hair. I didn’t shave mine as wanted to keep some of my hair so it showed under hats (upside of chemo in the winter!) but I did get a wig from the NHS plus I also bought a wig that came with a headband which I found much more comfortable going out in. I used this website and bought the swim wig. It meant i didn’t have to keep worrying about it slipping as the headband holds it down.
