I finished chemo over 2 weeks ago and am impatiently waiting for my hair to grow back! I know it’ll be a long journey but wondered if there was anything I could do or take to help it along. Has anyone successfully taken any supplements or anything that’s helped? Any tips welcome!
Hi there I've found using coconut oil I use lidl organic in a jar put a bit in your hand it melts really quick and add 4 drops of rosemary oil my hair is growing quickly now and I finishing chemo on the 29th December and it started growing almost 2 weeks after I hated loosing my hair it was waist length good luck with your journey xx
That sent before Id hardly started! it does take time and grows slowly in the first year whilst your hair follicles recover. After that it grows faster. within a few months you will have a good length pixie cut, at least. At one year my hair at the front is to the tip of my nose and I guess in another year I could have a short, same length bob. You can use products like minoxidil, but I feel cautious about using anything that might possibly re-awaken cancer cells. I still wear my wig, but many friends ditched it as soon as they had a trendy pixie cut. It feels like forever waiting for your hair to come back, but out of nowhere it appears, is baby soft and often curly. x
Thanks for the tips, I will try massaging and biotin!
Hi Margaret, that’s a fine head of hair you have now! What brand is No2?
I completely understand how you feel. I finished chemo on Jan 25th. I was very sad to lose my hair, it was really really long and I didn't know how much it would affect me to lose it. Not only from a vainity point of view but also because it steals your privacy and tells everyone, even strangers you are sick. My hair is growing now, I haven't been using any special products and it seems to be coming back 'quickly'. I am very impatient, I want it back and long NOW. I can't imagine going out without my wig until my hair is at least shoulder length. Maybe time will change this but it is a really difficult part of the horrible journey we are all on. You're definitely not alone and I wish you the best
Sorry Shellbell24 missed a word out lol it’s Nioxin No 2 system shampoo and conditioner . The photos are from when I finished chemo so 2020 .
Hair has always been thick but had thinned out a bit with age…. 70 when treatment started . Grew back as thick as when younger and grows so fast needs trim every 4 weeks to keep short as I now prefer . Whilst hair coming back I only washed when needed not every other day as had become normal prior . Also finger dried so no other product on hair .
Hopefully your hair return will be swift .
I feel/felt like you. I had very long curly hair before chemo and so find short hair strange. Oddly a pixie cut really suited me, but now its longer, in between and without weight to pin it down yet. It looks fine with curly hair product but doesn't look like me in the mirror! Lots of us wear our wigs for a fair while, and don't let anyone guilt trip you in to doing something you are not yet comfortable with. Around the house I wear soft hair bands from Claire's now that my hair is longer. I do avoid mirrors though! I am waiting for shoulder length hair or at least a layered bob and am working towards that with a lovely hairdresser. Even if you don't want to display your hair outside the house, it is lovely to do something normal - like have a hair cut. Ive also had a relaxing head massage too. Oh, and eye brow tint and shape. Things that make me feel like me, or re just a bit indulgent since I am not spending anything much on my hair these days! Do whats right for you - it does get there in the end, it just takes patience and a fair bit of time xxx
