Best type of prosthetic for swimming

Hi. I have just had a masectomy and wanted to get a prosthetic to use with my swimming costume. Unfortunately there is quite a wide range and I don't know whether to get a silicone breast form or a light weight prosthetic. My remaining boob is quite large and I'd be interested if anyone else has tried the different types of prosthetics.

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

Although I can't help with your question I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. This is probably because this is such an active group that your post has slipped off the first page before someone with the right experience has seen it. Replying to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussions list.

While you're waiting for replies it would be great if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Nichola Jane have a few, including their own one which is nice,  but sizes up slightly smaller in my experience.  My favourites are actually the free swim Knitted Knocker and a been-a -boob, which is the one I use most on a daily basis too (I have 2 so don't wear thr one that's been in the sea to work!).

  • Hey! I got a blue silicone type one which has spaces at the back for water to run through....it works but to be honest for the last year or so I just go ‘uniboob’ in a basis swimming costume and care less how it looks! I’m mainly in water anyway....on holiday I used it in a bikini...but only because there wasn’t really another option...a bit like a bra I suppose...

I would suggest you use the cheaper options first....my prosthetic was mostly covered by insurance....

  • Thanks for the tips. I've heard of knitted knockers but I hadn't realised they did an aqua version. I'm going to give them a try to begin with. I've a sensible swimsuit until I get used to my new shape and whip out the bikini,  so a cheaper prosthetic is perfect.
