Hello all. Hope everyone is doing as well as possible. I need advice about diet during my chemo. I have only had one session so far, and it’s been fine generally except the nausea is really beginninWearyto get me down, and last night it was quite dreadful. My problem is that information and advice online seems very contradictory. One site says eat nuts, another avoid them. The same with ice cream aWeary even some vegetables! I would be so grateful for your experiences, is it a case of what suits one person won’t suit another or are there general foods one should or should not eat. Many thanks in aWearyicipation coffeeholic ( ps I’ve gone off coffee Weary )

  • Well done for getting though your first chemo! I had FEC-T and found I was nauseous for a week following FEC and no nausea after T. I actually vomited for 1st 24 hours after 1st cycle and was hospitalised to have an IV of anti sickness. After that, they gave me stronger anti sickness tablets which helped but I still nauseous after each cycle.. If you are feeling to sick to eat, then ask your oncologist about stronger anti sickness meds.. Make sure you take the ones you do have as prescribed.

For things to eat, just find what's right for you. Your taste will change and that will be unique to you. I found my taste really went with docetaxel (the T) and I craved sweet stuff, which is not at all like me, just to get the awful taste out my mouth.

I was told the only things I couldn't eat were things that may give me an infection. So unpasteurised cheese, undercooked meat or eggs, unwashed salad etc.

You'll start to find things that you can eat and get into a pattern with it all. It is hard to know what to expect when you start!

  • Thank you Beatthebreast. What you say makes perfect sense, I am trying the “ little and often “ approach today and hope that helps. Your experience sounds pretty grim and I really hope you are feeling as good as possible now. Thanks again for your kind reply.

  • Coffeeholic, I finished chemo in January and can say that you will get through it and start to feel like yourself again! Taste went back to normal in about 5-6 weeks and my oncologist said I could eat normally again (not avoid things) about 3 weeks after last cycle. I had my operation 4 weeks after chemo so held off until after that but it was so good eating things again!

You'll get through this. Kissing heartKissing heart
