  • that's awful work conditions.  I went for my diabetic eye check up in a modern building - 5 years old and no air con.  It was stifling there, the waiting area and treatment rooms.  No blinds in one room windows so they'd mocked their own up with blanket.

A couple of years ago we bought Perfect Fit Venetian Blind for our rear patio doors in kitchen & dining room.  They are a god send in this heat as the doors face SW.  Easy DIY fit and we bought from Blinds2go.  How to fit blinds

I live by the seaside so a bit of breeze tonight keeping me cool in bed.  Not ventured near the beach though as nearest nice ones will be heaving and car parks packed by 9.30am.  Further afield lovely beaches you need to walk to but in this heat hard going carrying cool box etc.  When my daughter young we used to go to Rhossili bay which is a hard climb back up to car park but the beach lovely and quiet with no annoying people with radios blasting and pick pockets watching from nearby cliffs to see when you abandon your bags to go for a swim.

I keep my water bottle in the fridge even though I've a water dispenser fridge as I think water tastes funny from it.  Yesterday we visited friend who lives on farm and I was shocked to learn they have no central heating just electric fire in one room.  I know many of us can remember pre CH days and it was knobbling,  They moved into farmhouse which they've completely renovated 8 years ago from modern heated house !  They not on mains gas or sewerage and they said electric storage heaters useless so don't bother as they in and out all day with animals .

  • Hello Fruit Loops - hoping you are all coping with the weather Hugging

    - funny you mention about the radiators needing to be on to allow for hot water......

Our hot water and central heating was like this for over 30 years.....  the program clock for the hot water and central heating - which in theory you can slide across 'individually' to only have hot water on or heating on (if you slide both across 'both' will be on)..... however this didn't happen, if you had hot water on radiators came on to.....

Fast forward we are away looking after my dear late father.  My brother and his wife are calling at my house to feed cat.... brother phones and asks 'how do you have hot water without your radiators coming on' .... me: you can't it's something to do with 'gravity fed' the radiators always warm up too.....

Whilst away my bother does something 'simple' (I think wiring related) and that was it - now can have 'either/or' on.

It might be worth mentioning this and see if your work will get an electrician in to have a look at how the hot water/heating program is wired in.... you never know Fingers crossed

Sending love to all our Fruit Loops xxxx

I'm hoping this makes sense - only my mind says one thing and my fingers type whatever they like x
  • Gosh  and . I'm sitting reading this at 05.00 in 21° temperature and wonder what I'd do if I had a radiator on. I've actually put my pillows outside this morning as my hair was wet.

We start our 40 plus days today but to be honest.....the temperature has been in the upper thirties for days so we are getting used to it. Also we are fortunate....many French plus schools are already on holiday.

Please all of you heed the advice......seeing the sun makes you think picnic lunches or beaches or even swimming but this is not an Edwardian summer day. Unless you can picnic in the middle of thick wood without setting it alight, you will dehydrate rapidly in the air, burn on sand and the sun's reflection on the pool or river water will burn you also. When they say ' stay in' please ' stay in' from 11.00 to early evening.

Have your breakfast outside and  your supper. Don't be tempted to garden during the day. Close your windows and pull curtains by 10.00. Use electric light today and actually if you can acclimatise, use lamps because the darker the room, the cooler it will feel. And as I said before....keep drinking. A glass of cold winter permanently piured reminds you to drink it when you see it.

I don't think I would like the wet or cold clothes myself....but if it helps..... I do often change my clothes during the day. I suppose that's a similar effect.

Just take care of yourselves. OH and I still believe you have to stop telling yourself that it's hot.....and it could feel much hotter. There are not many storms around. The heat is dry.....it will make it much easier .

I believe you only have a couple of days of heat ......our forecast is for another ten. The fires have been dreadful. South of Bordeaux 12,000 people were evacuated.  Think twice about a bbq even on your own grass!

Have a good day. If you have just had chemo or are on tablets that give hot flushes, I am really thinking of you. Today , tomorrow  and Tuesday will not be the easiest you' ve spent.

Now, I have to water my pots( collected rain and dirty house water...not fresh!)

  • Good morning all, thanks for the tips  I have a fridge full of salads and freezer full of ice cream and would be fine in my big cool house if only I didn't have work on Monday.

I should say my workplace is an old building with 3 or 4 extensions all with their own central heating systems. We are 52 beds in all. It was the same 2001-2005 when I worked there before. Probably  management think as its only hot a few days a year let us suffer. Their excuse is 'the residents feel the cold'  I imagine there will be many staff ringing in sick.

I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend and taking care of yourselves in the heat xxx

  • Our rear garden is pure south facing so I have a outdoor canopy over decking . This is directly outside lounge French doors . I wouldn’t dream of being on that deck in the high temps but canopy will be up which in effect shades and cools lounge .
Last few days even the veggies  have their own large umbrella SaladCarrotUmbrella2️Umbrella2️

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

  • My house faces south east and of course north west at the back, so curtains are closed on the front at present but open at the back. At present there’s a breeze so I have some windows and doors open and fans bringing that breeze indoors. But soon they will be shut as the outside temp gets warmer.
I’ve already been out to pick fruit and freeze (oh and my tee shirt was lovely to put on this morning!)

Stay as cool as you can and stay safe, folk!

  • Pool being refilled as I've been sitting in same water a week (I do have a cleaning flotation thing in it ).  Gazebo over to give shade .

    Also look after the birds

  • Thank you , just what I needed to know. Explains it. Xx

Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!

  • Thanks so much ..I do need things spelled out to me.It is no good the news keeping saying “It’s Hot-there’s a risk to life”but people like me need that illustrated.I will not go out now I have read what you say….except Tiny Tots is on on Tuesday from 09.00-10.30…the cooler part of the day.

i suppose it is because we haven’t had it in this country before,in living memory.

I do get other countries get hot too,but somehow they have evolved to manage it.

I feel so sorry for you, having to work in those conditions.

Something needs to be done to protect staff in workplaces. There seems to be legislation for it being too cold, but not “too hot”.Surely this is a health and well-being issue, and could be dangerous.

our Sister used to come out and put all the Wards fans on around the Ward, and it was very refreshing.

    Lovely to see you again

    Love,V xxxx
