To summarise my case: end of June 2021 diagnosis of BC. 9th July 2021 TURBT. Removed 2 tumors, one 3cm. and a second 3mm. Both turned out G3T1a. Done 15 BCG treatments. Last ended mid Sept this year. Today first cystoscopy after 1 year of BCG. The bladder in slightly inflamed. Which apparently, despite being annoying , is a good sign...as that's what the BCG is meant to do: trigger an immune reaction. But aside from the inflammation there is no reoccurrence! I have been lucky! My consultant said that the BCG has done what it was meant to do... so yes: BCG works!
Next cystoscopy will be in 3 months time. Under GA as the consultant wants to take some biopsies. To be sure...
Hi Marco. Great news and gives hope for others in early stages. I've had a couple of follow ups under GA and been in and out in several hours with no aftereffects other than the usual stinging. Best wishes going forward.
Fantastic news, that gives me hope as I am hoping to start with this treatment. So pleased for you, can you relax a bit now for 3 months. Did you manage with the instillations without too much side effects?
HOPE AT LAST
Hi bumblebee49! Thanks! The side effects from the instillations were not too severe. Those will depend on the individual response to the BCG. The worse I had was after the last couple, this September. Fatigue, a little temperature, general aches, High urination frequency with burning sensation. These are normal and you get a little of these frequently after the instillation. Normally they go away in a couple of days. These last treatments I have had those side effects slightly worse and lasting for a month... but nothing that prevented me from doing my normal activities. I have never missed a day's work because of BCG side effects... in any case the side effects are temporary and pass after a couple or a few days. There is a very low probability of getting serious side effects if the BCG goes for any reason outside the bladder (blood stream, other organs,...) but I have only heard of 1 case, so given the low frequency my opinion is that the benefits (remaining alive and with your bladder) much outweigh the risks. You will be monitored frequently. Cystoscopy every 3 months. This is to ascertain the effectiveness of the treatment.
I really hope the BCG will work for you. Let us know!
Thanks so much mpb1963, I was going to ask if you continued to work because that's something I have been thinking about. I am office admin in NHS and could possibly do some work from home rather than give up altogether. I have been continuing to work between turbts etc.
I really want to feel hopeful because mentally I just do not feel ready for the big op yet.
It's so helpful to read your post. I am going off today with a little more hope.
Good! I am happy you feel more positive. You should!
I have never missed a day's work, but in a few occasions I was happy I could work from home...
Good luck and keep us posted!
Yes I have told Guys hospital that I want to go for bcg/mitomycin 9 weeks course and I pray to God for success and hope the treatment will work
