Hello
I've been booked in to start my first of six weekly treatments. I believe after the first six treatments are over, there is a break of x number of weeks before another biopsy is done to assess how successful (or otherwise) these initial treatments have been. My consultant did tell me, but I was so over the moon at the time having just been told by him that the MRI and CT scans had not only confirmed that my grade 3, stage 1, plus CIT bladder cancer WAS non invasive, but that no other part of me showed anything to worry about. Having been having nightmares about worse case scenarios for the three weeks since those scans, I wasn’t taking in all he was saying! So my query is:
Hello Seamoth. Good to know there is nothing else to worry about, it takes away a bit of anxiety. The time lapse for a follow up cystoscopy varies according to the hospital, but the average is about 4-6 weeks. They need to let any inflammation to die down in order to give them a clear view. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.
Hi Seamoth, my husband has stage 3 non muscle invasive bladder cancer, yesterday he had his 4th of 6 BCG treatments, which by the way have not thankfully caused any side effects, in the leaflet the hospital sent it says a cystoscopy and bladder biopsies will be arranged for 6 weeks after the treatment has finished to see how effective it has been. He is treated by N&N hospital in Norwich, I expect different hospitals will differ but that’s what ours is.
One interesting point is that he can’t have his covid autumn booster jab or any vaccinations a week before and a week after finishing treatment.
Hope all goes well for you.
Hi Ma Baker
thanks for your reply! Very useful as I'm also being treated via N & N in Norwich. Because I live nearer to Cromer they’ve arranged for me to have the BCG treatments at the Macmillan centre at Cromer Hospital. So far I've been really impressed with the N&N. I met my Urology Consultant for the first time yesterday…..he was fabulous! I wonder if its the same one who’s looking after your husband? His surname begins with a K (not sure whether we are allowed to mention doctors names in here).
I also had to cancel my pre booked autumn Covid vaccine, which worries me a bit. But the leaflet I got from the Macmillan Centre in Cromer said no vaccine 3 weeks before or after. I will query this 3 week thing in view of what you’ve been told, as I’d like to have it as soon as possible.
Many thanks again for your reply. Hope all goes very well for your husband.
How strange, you are both under same hospital, my husbands BCG treatment is at Cromer, the N&N and Cromer are linked so you may have treatment at either, the first appt was at Cromer which included a flexible cystoscopy where they found a problem., he then had to go to N&N for scans etc and TURBT’s under GA, his Drs name starts with R.
The leaflet we got from N&N said1 week, but the leaflet from Cromer said 3 weeks for vaccinations, ( N&N was a newer leaflet) when I queried time with the nurse she said 2 weeks, I said well that’s 3 different answers now, she said she would find out and she rung us and said 1 week.
I don’t know if you have got your dates yet, they do the BCG on a Friday, the first one you have to wait the 2 hrs, although you don’t have to stay in the department, we sat in the car, if all goes ok you then just have the instillation and then go home, we are about the same distance from Norwich and Cromer.
You never know we may see you in the waiting room.
Thats amazing. So glad to have found a fellow Norfolkian (is that a word, I wonder!). My treatments are also all scheduled for Fridays, at 3pm. Starting on 7 October. You’ll recognise me, if we do happen to be in the waiting room at the same time, by the anxious look in my eyes disguised by a brave face! I live in Heydon, btw.
Our first appt was at 1.30 then 10.30 for the rest so may nor see you, it would be nice to meet though, I don’t know if Norfolkiam is a word, perhaps Norfolk dumpling!! take care and if you need anything we are happy to help, both emotionally and practically, we live in Fakenham so not far from you.
.Jean.
If yours is as good as my husbands you will get through it ok, the nurses are brilliant, the macmillan centre is very calm and no pressure, we were worrying ( although I must admit I’m the worrier and the one who checks all the stats) but it wasn’t too bad. At the end of the end of the day we don’t want to be here but whatever help or encouragement we can get makes all the difference. Take care x
Jean.
