Yesterday, I finished day 10 out of 28 days of Chemoradiotherapy for anal cancer and today I've been experiencing some really dark brown, almost blackish vaginal discharge. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and is it the radiotherapy?.

Thanks for any help.

  • Hi Hamfan21 I wanted to say just to put your mind at rest speak to your oncology team. I had green discharge starting after the treatment which was pretty unpleasant and my first thought was infection. It wasn’t an infection and part of the journey not all luckily experience. Take care

  • Hi Hamfan, Well Done for getting to day 10. As Jaycee12 says your oncology team will advise you, but in case you can’t get hold Of them at the weekend, I wouldn’t worry too much. I know that you can get a thing called melena where if there is a little bit of bleeding higher up the bowel , it will Colour stools black, so I wonder if this is maybe some old bleeding from inside your womb leaking out? Assuming you have not had a hysterectomy. I would suspect that is a bit of collateral damage from the radiotherapy.

Like Jaycee12 I am currently experiencing a greenish discharge as I approach the end of treatment, delightful isn’t it?

How are you feeling this week?

  • hey Hamfan21 - I'm pretty new to all this, but really grateful to people like you (and those that have replied) for speaking out so openly in this forum, as a lot of the 'technicalities' of these treatments are not easy topics to discuss with  people who've not been through it. I have no discharge (but useful to know ahead-of-time that this could happen). I was not expecting my vagina to be affected, but getting quite a bit of pain there - 'spark-y', 'stab-y', 'bite-y' pain. I agree with the others, encourage you to link in with your team ASAP and get some explanation, assurance, or assistance. Best wishes.

  • I've just realised I've not replied,

Hope you're all ok , as ok as can be. So this was normal. I went to urgent care and the Doc put me onto an antibiotic drip, protocol for someone going in with cancer (didn't know this) I was also put in a room on my own, also protocol so I wasn't around other patients. Long story short, the A+e doc who saw me didn't fill me with much confidence. He admitted that oncology isn't their field but he'd spoken to his consultant who had checked bloods (all good) and I was ok to go as its radio side effects. I asked if this was an on call onc consultant to which the reply was no, there isn't one on at weekends. I asked about the onc ward and he still told me there wasn't one. I was feeling fine in myself so on the Monday I emailed my macmillan nurse with all details (she's the radiotherapy specialist nurse). The chemo nurse also called me to check in as she does weekly so I also spoke to her and they both said there's ALWAYS one on. The mac nurse reassured me and also got the onc doc down to radiotherapy to speak to me and I was sent away with Caneston and a 1 off tablet for thrush too.

It's such a learning journey. I now know to press for the onc consultant if needed, just hope I don't get back to A+E.

I now also have COVID would you belive!  thankfully, I'm able to continue with treatment. I was so sick Mon night, temp and headache. I called the out of hrs onc ward for advice and they suggested anti sickness ,covid never crossed my mind, I've not mixed, been testing neg however, my daughter who also has been testing neg was positive so that's where it came from. Soooo close to finishing, I was stressed out I'd need a break as I didn't realise I'd continue treatment. Tuesday I was worn out and nauseous now I just feel like I have a very mild cold, just a bit of blocked nose.

Enough of me, what are you all doing this weekend? Xx

  • Ouch, talk about being kicked when you're down. Cancer treatment with a side of vaginal distress and Covid! Poor you. Really hope it all passes fast.
