Insurance and melanoma

I am having two melanomas removed two weeks before flying to France to holiday with my grandchildren. I will also need a WLE and SNB but not until I return from holiday. I really feel I need this break for my mental health as I’m struggling since being diagnosed. I had already booked travel insurance before my diagnosis but they won’t cover me now as I’m still undergoing cancer treatment. Can anyone advise me if I can get insurance whilst waiting on WLE. Thanks

  • Hi

Unfortunately, it can be more difficult to get travel insurance when you're undergoing treatment. I had to cancel my holidays when waiting for treatment so don't have any personal recommendations for insurers who would insure you.

However, have you had chance to look through the 'recommended travel insurance' and 'recommended travel insurance 2023-24' threads yet as you'll find lots of suggestions for travel insurance there? If not, it's best to go through them and make a list before settling down to get quotes.

Often it's easier to phone, rather than do online quotes, as you might still be asked to phone them at the end of the quote.

Do let us know how you get on, and I hope you're able to get insurance so that you can continue with your planned holiday.

  • Thank you, I will let you know how I get on.

  • Apply for a GHIC , free from UK Government, card entitles you to hospital treatment in many European countries but not to repatriation costs, unfortunately travel insurance can be very expensive for cancer patients, some companies refuse cover.

  • Thank you I will look into this.

  • A GHIC is a good back up but the treatment it entitles you to is not necessarily free as it only entitles you to the same level of treatment as a resident of the country that you're in and that might not be free.

The NHS website says "The UK GHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance. We advise you to have private travel and medical insurance for the duration of your trip."
