Hi everyone,

We have received some feedback that you would like a more recent recommended travel insurance thread set up.

The lovely @latchbrook set up the original 'recommended travel insurance thread' which you can still view here. Just so you don't have to go through the different pages of information to find recent recommendations, you can find the most recent experiences in this thread.

Please note, all recommendations are from Community members and are not recommendations from Macmillan. Please do your own research as to whether the companies are suitable for you.

This thread can be used to update the group when you've found an insurance company that provided you with cover at a reasonable cost from a recommendation you found here or elsewhere.

If you could put a little bit of additional information eg. whether you got a single trip or annual, cover for a cruise, worldwide, etc along with anything else that you think others would find helpful when they are researching that would be great.

You may also find reading Macmillan's 'Finding travel insurance when you are living with cancer' blog useful

  • This may help people. I'm 59 and have Breast Cancer, which has spread to spine and pelvis (stage 4). Sought travel insurance (April 2024) for a 9-day trip to The Azores and also a week trip to Rhodes. Saga - couldn't quote, another had such a strong accent and spoke so quickly I couldn't understand (and felt they weren't able to go off script). A couple of others online also declined. Tried All Clear Travel Insurance (AllClearTravel.co.uk) - on the telephone - quite long but easy and helpful conversation with UK call centre and was quoted £260 and £279, which I was happy to go with. They wouldn't do an annual multi-trip which I understand probably no-one would.

  • Hi

Thanks very much for taking the time to add your recommendation and I hope you have a lovely holiday.

  • Reading through the below replies, it seems travel insurance with a terminal diagnosis is possible but I've tried several companies over this weekend and each one has said they can't insure my husband. The only company who possibly might insure him (they need more information before giving a quote) said it would be over £1000.

I'm assuming the fact my husband had a heart attack in April is the reason for declining to insure — even though he's feeling better than he has in months and hasn't had any more chest pain or even used his GTN spray.

We just want one last holiday in the sun. My husband is telling me to not bother with insurance and just go away anyway whilst he's still able to.

I don't know what to do. Has anyone else been in the same position and can advise us?

  • I'm really confused by this;  my husband and I had an annual travel insurance policy with All Clear;  last year, when we were both undergoing chemotherapy, the policy was c£3000.   This year as we were both out of treatment it dropped to £1800.   I rung to advise that 3 small nodes had been found and I had to have radiotherapy whereby they said they wouldn't insure me on the annual policy any longer (with no rebate despite the policy running from April 2024 to April 2025) but would give me (my husband still covered by the annual policy) single trip insurance for a 10 day holiday to Canada in September for £6000.   Yes, not a typo, £6000.

Nonetheless I am pleased that you have got insurance and do hope you have a couple of great holidays!!!!

  • Thats outragious!

Certainly feels like there are very few options out there for the seriously ill.  I also tried to get a yearly policy but hit a massive brick wall. My cancer consultant told me to go on holiday while i still can - Im well at the moment so thought all this would be straight forward, I was wrong. Maybe try  again with Staysure they seem to be advertising heavily at the moment?

  • If anyone is on a clinical trial and is going through the hell of ringing all the companies only to get declined try Good to Go insurance first.

They are the only ones that would cover my husband at a reasonable cost and that was for Australia. The only other one that even considered it would have been more than the cost of our holiday!

It's very frustrating that insurers either refuse or inflate premiums when people are on trials even though the ABI has said there is not increased risk.

  • Thanks very much for taking the time to post your recommendation  and I hope you and you husband have a lovely time in Australia.

  • I've been watching the insurance threads here and on other forum areas as I was finding it difficult to get a reasonable quote. Because of the help here I have just  set up a policy with Insurancewith. Single trip to Europe for me and my wife who has been treated for breast cancer, £125. I think that is quite good, one mainstream insurer wanted over £1000. There are lots of questions but they are quite straightforward. Other insurers are available.
