Getting travel insurance with a terminally ill close relative?

Dear all,

I'm thinking of booking a family holiday (10 days in Europe) with my husband and kids in April 2025. My dear Dad has prostate cancer and kidney failure and has been given 1-2 years to live, although we fear there's a chance it may be less than that. I want to be here in the UK when he dies, both to be with him and to support my Mum.

Please can anyone advise on suitable travel insurance I could get, in case I need to cancel the holiday? From what I've read so far, I believe that I would have to declare Dad's condition at the time of buying the insurance. I'm thinking of booking the holiday with either Jet2 Holidays or Love Holidays, but I could obviously get insurance with a different company if their policies aren't suitable.

I'd be really grateful for any tips, as I am new to this.

  • Hi  and welcome to the travel insurance group

I'm sorry to read about your dad's diagnoses and I can understand you wanting to find travel insurance that will cover you if you need to return home because of this.

There have been quite a few people who have posted in this group in the past also trying to find the type of cover that you are looking for. Unfortunately, none of them have ever come back to say whether they've been successful or not.

You could look through this thread, as it's where the majority of recommendations for travel insurance for people with cancer will be found, although none of the recommendations are specifically for your scenario. However, those travel insurance companies would be a good place to start.

I'm 'tagging'  into my reply to you as they were the last to ask this question. Although they didn't come back to say whether they were successful or not, I'm hoping they will respond to you.

PLEASE do come back and let us know if you were successful or not as it will be really helpful for future people looking for this type of insurance.

How did your search for travel insurance go?

  • Hi there, thank you so much for your reply, and I'm sorry for my slow response.

I called the insurance company (the guys who are linked to Love Holidays) and they confirmed what it says in their policy, which is that we would be covered IF my Dad's medical professional is happy to confirm in writing, before I book, that they don't anticipate my Dad declining significantly before the time of my holiday. So I asked my Mum to try and get the medics to do that, because I didn't feel like involving my Dad in the process / didn't want him worrying about me going on holiday which seems quite unimportant compared to the bigger picture.

However, in the end I've decided to stay UK-based this year because I realised that I would only feel bad if I went abroad and was worrying about him. So I have just booked an AirBnB break in the UK which has free cancellation up to 5 days before we go.

  • Hi

No need to apologise, I know that we all have more important things on our minds.

That's interesting that as long as you could get a written statement from your dad's consultant that they are not expecting him to deteriorate they would cover you if you needed to cancel or come back early.

I hope you have a great break here in the UK.
