Hi. My mom who had CMML is 6 months post sct and her last 2 bloods show a significant drop in platelets. She's had another bone marrow biopsy which we await results. Is it possible that this is just a glitch and her platelets will recover on their own? She was in 3 figures and last result was 74.

She also has too many of her own cells still with 41 out of 200 being hers and we were told it should ideally be 4 or 5 by now.

The journey so far has had many many ups and downs and I'm not always prepared for what we are told so asking the consultant the right questions at the time kind of goes out the window.

Thank you.

  • Hi Helly,

we were told that chimerism (balance of own cells to donor cells) can go down as well as up, this could explain some of your Mum’s problems.

It might be worth asking if a boost could be an answer (it’s called a DLI or donor lymphocyte infusion) and could well be a suitable treatment.

In the meantime, I hope they will give her a platelet infusion to prevent problems.

its often useful to take a notebook listing the questions you have to all appointments, as it can prompt you into asking at the time. You should also have a specialist transplant nurse contact, too, so it might be worth a call to them.

  • Hi , your mum is actually making good progress. The issues she is facing can indeed be part of most post SCT journey’s

My Chimerism was all over the place coming in at the high 90% at the first test then after day 150 it sat at the low 50% donor cells and it took a good 23 months before they went up to 100%..... but some folks live happily not reaching 100%

10 months post SCT my bone marrow was not producing all the blood counts I needed so was on blood transfusions every two weeks for 3-4 months.

Talk with her team to understand what the plan is to move this forward.

    ((hugs))

Thanks both for your replies. It's reassuring to hear that these aren't unusual things to face.

As always it's the waiting and unknown that's been the hardest for us to deal with.

I will look through the link you shared.
