Hi, I had my post stem cell transplant check up today and was told I’ve likely gone into menopause. The plan is to refer me to a different hospital and they'd likely start me on HRT. I’m only 26 so was wondering if any one of a similar age has gone through this and could tell me about their experience? Or if anyone knows where I could find more information as everything I’ve found so far is about menopause in general or really vague.
Hi Meg27
I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community. It must have been difficult to hear that you're likely to now be in the menopause after your stem cell transplant.
I haven't had this treatment but thought I'd suggest that you also post this in the stem cell transplants group, which I can see that you've joined, as you'll then connect directly with others who have had the same type of treatment.
When you have time, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Hi Meg, hope you're doing ok. Reading your story reminded me of mine, as I was exactly the same age 10 years ago, when I hit premature menopause (POF) as a result of chemo and Auto SCT. I am sorry about about what you're going through, but hopefully my story will give you some hope.
Hearing the news of menopause at only 26years can be really heartbreaking, as it was for me. I remember my gyno at the time tell me (I was newly married going through all this) I wouldn't be able to conceive as a result of my almost nonexistent ovarian counts.
After SCT, my periods seized completely for about 2 years. I also experienced really really bad internal heat. I started HRT to help with the symptoms, but I stopped myself after a few months. However, despite all these, I want to assure you that our bodies have an outstanding ability to heal itself and recover especially at a young age.
For me, my period eventually returned 2 years post SCT but very irregular(almost like you'll see me when you see me). When I told my gyno my period had returned, I remember he said they were false periods, as my hormonal profile showed I was still menopausal.
However, 2021 - 5 years post SCT, I miraculously conceived naturally for the first time ever (despite my irregular cycle) and again in 2024 - 8years post SCT. I now have 2 healthy babies even with a "messed up" sporadic cycle.
This may or may not be your journey, you may or may not be interested in having kids. However, I just wanted to reassure you that there's still light at the end of the tunnel! Things will get better over time. Trust your body, speak positively to it and never stop beli
