I've just been diagnosed with lymphoma.

I don't know what type yet as I went in early today for a check-up and they had the results early.

They thought it was breast cancer so I was in the Linda McCartney.  It was there they told me it was lymphoma but not their speciality so couldn't tell me anymore.

I now am at home just waiting, wondering what to do, where do I start.  Who do I tell.  I have a mum who is elderly and a son with autism who both need me.

I think I need some reassurance that it has a good success rate of recovery.

Thank you

M

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Online Community, a Community that no one really looks to see themselves joining, and so sorry to hear about your Lymphoma diagnosis.

I was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a rare type of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (CTCL) and I am still around doing great.

There are over 60 types of Lymphoma and treatment can be very different across most the types but at this early stage you need to hear that on the whole this is very treatable with great long lasting results - yes some treatments can be hard work but all do-able.

The Community is organised into support groups so once you know the type you can join the best group

    Hodgkin's Lymphoma

    General Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma

    Follicular Lymphoma

    Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma

    Mantel Cell Lymphoma

    T-Cell Lymphoma

Its always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support or just a listing ear.

Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

Our Online Information and Support Section  is a good place to find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.

In the meantime stick to this post and I can help you through this part of the journey and eventually get you into the best group for your type.

You will have lots of questions so ask away.

Mike, thank you so very, very much for your post.  It was informative, reassuring and inspiring.  I love the Nelson Mandela quote, I have a book of quotes to inspire, encourage and support me and that will definitely go in.

    Love this group already.

Ha!  Like the pointy elbows.  Yes, I will.  Think one of my faults it I give the man in a white coat too much respect, too much power.  I know they are brilliant but I need to learn to take charge of my own life, put me first and stop always thinking about others.  I'm a carer you see, autistic son and elderly mother.  Clearly, I cannot tell them.  Both have issues of their own to deal with and will send them over the edge.   I will need to come up with a condition that is treatable so if I do keep going to hospital, they will know why.  Thank you Mike.   You are amazing and a real inspiration.
