After having very loose stools, I took immodium and it stopped! Now I've had no output for 3 days, no pain, swelling or nausea, just slot of gurgling noises! I was never regular before the stoma but I'd like some advice please, if this has happened to other people!
regards, Moira (Three) x
Hi Artsie,
thank you for your reply. I've had a colostomy since January and I just can't seem to get it right! A few hours after writing, there was output, and there lies my problem! I'm very loose for a few days, so I take immodium, then I have no output for days, before the whole darned thing starts again! I've tried stopping certain foods and think I've got it beat, but no, as today has proved, I haven't! Thank you once again for your reply, it's very kind of you trying to help,
regards, Moira
Hi Three
what a pain these Stoma’s are.
Mines called whoopi.
I'm sorry I’m not much help as I have an ileostomy and she’s always on the go. When she stops I panic thinking blockage.
I found it really trying to get any sleep as she’s two hourly. So I broke all the rules and ate crackers last thing and I get four to five hours before having to empty.
Have you kept a food diary I expect you have you’re further along than me.
I hope things become easier to manage soon
kind regards
Artsie Ann

Hi Artsie,
I think I'm luckier than you, at least mine only usually needs emptying 1-2 twice a day! Honestly, I thought by now I'd be well used to it but I'm not! On top of that I developed a hernia, right under the stoma, so I look pregnant unless I wear a girdle,! At 71 yes old, it gets some strange looks!
When I first had the stoma, it behaved perfectly but this last month has been he'll! I've tried keeping a diary but I can't see any change in my food habits!
Thank you so much for trying to help, hope you and Whoopi keep on getting along! She obviously likes crackers!
Best Wishes, Moira
She does like crackers. I prefer wine myself and she’s okay with occasional tipple.
Hernia!
Oh no what a pain that is.
You should name your Stoma it makes it a little bit of fun.
I like whoopi Goldberg so that was the first thought. Then I thought no Hermione from Harry Potter. As Hermione saved potters life …..so very apt Then I had beans and Whoopi became vocal. Like a whoopee cushion so that was it. She’s named.
what would you call yours?
Artsie

Good idea about naming your stoma. I've had three, and I named them after my Surgeons - hence: Monty ( after Professor Montgomery), Hamid (after Mr Kaywaja) and Chouda ( after you guessed it) Mr Chouda. I came to the conclusion naming them "little fu**er was rather ungrateful.
Kath
"don't think about tomorrow"
I think it's a darned good idea, naming the stoma, so after a lot of thought, I'd like to introduce Brooke, named after a gurgling brook, because that's all she does, gurgles! Maybe wine would be more acceptable to her, it certainly would be to me! 2 years since I've had a drink! I'm on so many pain killers, that don't even touch the pain, that I dare not do more than smell it! Whoopi is hilarious and Kath, so is yours! At least I can still have a giggle, even without the wine!

Hi Three,
I have had my colostomy since the middle of August and have named my stoma George (after Joyce Grenfell's nursery monologues - "Don't do that, George!"). I too am having trouble second guessing my output - it seems to be rather loose - but can go a day or two with nothing and then pour! I am 70 and find the new normal difficult to adapt to. Haven't been able to find particular foods that start it off or stop it up - oh well! Open to any suggestions.
All the best to you
Jane
