After emergency diagnosis of abdominal blockage a loop ileostomy was performed so I've been using stoma appliance for 3 months now. Had a lot of skin discomfort for weeks but now using aloe stoma rings so that problem is resolved. Issue I'd welcome advice on is massage techniques to move materials after meals down to 'the Donald' (my noisy friend). I find lying on my tummy often succeeds in moving things along and relieves discomfort. I tried to talk to my stoma care nurse about how to perform self-massage but that wasn't at all helpful. I'd like to know where specifically to apply hand pressure and how firmly to press. Any advice welcomed.

Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community
I can't help with massage techniques to quieten Donald but I noticed that your post hadn't had any responses yet.
While you're waiting for responses you could type 'massage' into the search bar at the top of the page and see if there are any previous posts on this topic. You could also post your question in the ask a nurse section of the community and one of the specialist nurses will aim to reply within 2 working days.
When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Hi,
I have had an temporary ileostomy since April and have have had minimal issues with food not moving down. I was just wondering really why you have to do this, does it not all flow naturally? I have never heard of self massage as an everyday thing, just if you have a blockage.
I had a slight blockage once when I ate a jacket potato skin not long after I had the ileostomy and I had a warm drink and a warm bath and rubbed my tummy in the bath, and brought my knees up to my chest a few times and things soon got moving again. I eat everything now except sweetcorn and mushrooms and as long as i chew everything really well it all moves along nicely!
I do have to say mine also is very noisy, you just have to make a joke of it don't you and try not to get embarrassed.. I work at a school and actually am dreading the noises when I go back as you know what teenagers are like! Hope I have had my reversal by then!
Take care and keep safe xxx
