Swimming with a Stoma

Hi all,

Mainly aimed at men I guess, looking to get into swimming for exercise post colorectal surgery and chemo, but wondering what I should wear on my top half to support colostomy bag?

Thanks for any advice,

  • Hi  and welcome to the group.

I was hoping that some men would come along and reply, as although I swim with two stomas (colostomy and urostomy) I’m a woman so I’m in a different situation.

My “support” for my bags comes from what I wear on my bottom half as I wear a tankini to go in the pool or sea. If you feel you need support on your top half, could you perhaps wear a tight fitting vest top/rash vest like the kind worn by divers under a wetsuit for example?

  • Adrian S,

I was never  much of a swimmer but decided to wear a Comfiz waistband if necessary. Seems ideal for purpose. However, for post-op exercise I joined a local Tai Chi class. Gentle exercise for the whole body without straining anything and good for the mind. And you keep your clothes on! I avoided the form of Tai Chi where attendees wear Judo suits and all that and opted for a more casual form with more mature attendees. Loose, casual clothing and trainers are the norm.

  • Hi Sarah

Have decided for now to try a top by Gul as see how that goes, not much of a swimmer anyway, but girl friend is insisting I give it a go.

    Thank you for your reply

Not much of a swimmer myself, but the current neuropathy is making other forms of exercise difficult. Also seeing my Stoma team on Monday as I think the stoma is herniating, so I don't want to try anything until I have spoken with them.

    Thankyou for your reply
