APR requirements

I had a very unpleasent 6th month scan result yesterday.

3 months scan said I has a small residual mass that might reduce.

6th month I was told it was "Marginally worse" or could be "Scar tissue over infection"

Not a good start and I assumed we were headed for the APR route. The oncologyst then told me I might not be able to have an APR and may have to go to Palliative/Currarive chemo treatment.

My original staging was T2 N1a M0

It seemed a big jump from residual mass to no option but pallative/curative care.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Cheers

Ian

  • Hi Ian ,

I am normally over in the Bowel thread but I can see how distressing that must have been . Just to encourage you although a different area chemo actually resulted in my mum going from inoperable you operable twice . However I see that this has been a discussion with an oncologist so I would encourage you if it’s not already lined up to seek an opinion directly with a surgeon. It helped us clarify what needed to be achieved but also surgeons know better what margins they can achieve surgically . Some surgeons are able to do more extensive surgery than others .
You are entitled to a second opinion and it’s good to make direct contact with them . Your GP or previous surgeon could maybe advise who is the most specialist surgeon in that field . My mum’s previous surgeon was happy to refer on to someone else who was more experienced.

I hope you are getting to grips with the results but we have also seen chemo achieve quite a lot too . Did you ask if there was any radiotherapy options ? It all comes as such a surprise you sometimes need a day or two to collect your thoughts .

    Take care ,

    Thanks for the reply there.

You're right,  it did take a couple of days to get over the very blunt delivery from the oncologyst.

Ive been speaking to a surgeon on the subject and hes explained the many varied options open when the 1mm margin becomes an issue.

Im in a much better place now.

    Cheers
