TIA Rab
Hi Rab
Five years is a long time to have experienced the same problem
It is not uncommon to experience bleeding around the base of the stoma but I am unsure if this is your problem or if you have broken peristomal skin that is bleeding.
Brava powder is used to dry out weeping skin it has no healing properties.
Do you use a barrier film when changing your pouches.
As you have had your ileostomy for five years have you been having your annual check up with a stoma care nurse.
Broken peristomal skin can be caused by irritation from the pouch barrier adhesive, frequent changing of the pouch or leakages, I take it that as you've had yours for five years you are still regularly checking your hole size.
I would suggest you contact a stoma care nurse to examine your stoma, if you have lost contact with your original one you can contact the stoma nurses at your hospitals or you could have a word with your supply company as some have community nurses who could examine it.
I was introduced to a product called Independence Products Fusion protective barrier film applicators and very rarely have broken skin, I do get bleeding round the base of my stoma which I expect as normal but it can be caused by the pouch barrier being too tight against the sides and making it bleed.
Out of curiosity do you have the same problem with your urostomy

Hi Ian
thank you for the response i have only ever been given Brava powder nothing else ! as for seing the stoma team last time i asked to see them i had to wait around six months to get an appointment which was well over two years ago as for my urostomy its very rare for me to have any issues with it y stoma i have named winny ( as in winny the pooh) and sweet peee after my urostomy i am just happy to be around with my issues every day is a challenge but with help and love from family makes it all worth while
Best wishes and regards Rab
Raw skin round the stoma is so sore. I’m sorry you’re experiencing that. Have you tried “donuts” that fit round the stoma and keep the sore places free of poo? I’ve found the Salt ones work best for me and help.
Hi Rab
Have you checked with your supply company about seeing a stoma care nurse, Salts, Convatec, Respond and others have community stoma care nurses whilst Securicare Medical hold clinics in some areas of the the UK (England) if you obtain your supplies from any of the Amcare (Convatec) group of supply companies and you're a member of the Me+ programme you can get access to a nurse very quickly. Coloplast hold regular clinics in Peterborough.
All the nurses will give your stoma a check up and advise you on any problems that you maybe having.
Fittleworths have nurses that you can speak to on the telephone.
I think if the problem with broken skin is an ongoing problem you should consider changing your stoma pouch to another manufacturer and you can try as many different types of pouches as you want by contacting the manufacturers direct, some will want to discuss the problem first before they recommend samples to send you.
If I can be of any help to you in finding suitable products please let me know and it will be my pleasure to assist.
Keep in touch with me and let me know how you are getting on.
Ian
p.s. community stoma care nurses from the supply companies seem to cover most of England

Hi,
My stoma is bleeding around the outside/boundary. I have granulomas which are red and bleed when I clean up and change my bag.
Any advice would be great.

I’m so sorry to read your note Lisa. It’s worth speaking to all the specialist nurses, and I wonder whether you could bear to send them photos of the site places.
I have a continual battle to stop my skin becoming sore. These all help. Cavilon no sting barrier film between me and the pouch.
A dansac “donut” round the stoma to keep the bag away from the sorest places. ConvaTec Orahesive powder helps with healing, as does LBF barrier cream.
While I still get sore patches, they’re mostly under control.
Hi Wellspring,
Thank you for your reply.
I rang and spoke to a stoma nurse this morning and explained everything and she said that granulomas are harmless (which I knew) and they do bleed and nothing to worry about. I am happy with that.
Take care and thank you,
Lisa

Hi
Granulomas are indeed harmless they are more of a inconvenience than of anything else and can make life a tad more difficult if they are bleeding when you are changing your pouch, as you just know you are not going to get good skin to pouch adhesion.
If you are happy and can live with it go for it, you don't really want to be applying prescription strength Corticosteroids cream or ointments or having laser treatment but if you think you could do with having some help you could ask your stoma care nurse to apply liquid nitrogen to the affected area which may help remove the lesions.

Hi Ian,
Thank you for your reply and I hope you are well.
The granulomas (s) don't bother me and are not painful. It is because it is bleeding. Looking at my stoma and my pre-cut pouches, they need resizing.
Typical, my order arrived yesterday. When I spoke to the stoma nurse the other day, she told me to look at Charter's website which will help me with resizing.
I was concerned because of the bleeding and the stoma nurse said they don't like to do anything to granulomas, only if they are bothersome, which it isn't. She also reassured me they are harmless too, which is great, as I panic over everything.
Take care and stay safe,
Lisa

"""""Great Advice""""""" from your stoma nurse.
I've pulled this out from my library that might be of help.
I take it you've still got a note of all the pouch manufacturers, if so I would suggest a quick email to them***** all asking for a measuring guide, you might get lucky and get a few plastic sheets which are the best. Pelican have an excellent paper sheet with all the sizes which incorporates oblong sized holes.
Ian
******The way I do multiple requests to to many manufacturers is to do one email BUT I DON'T put an address in the to line but go down to the bcc address line and drop all the companies email addresses here, (one email many recipients)
