Early reversal due to high output stoma and declining health

Does anyone have experience of an early stoma reversal? They surgeon and hospital team are doing everything possible to stop mums high output stoma, and she keeps getting dehydrated and sustaining kidney injuries. She is also low in sodium so is getting confused, tearful and keeps trying to escape the ward. She is on 64 mg imodium a day, and now they are adding in fybogel. I know they will do a leak test on her with dye, but she is really worried about an early reversal. Any thoughts? She has cleared 4 weeks since the colectomy and ileostomy.

    Hi

I really am sorry for your mum she is certainly having it rough just now.

I appreciate your question was about reversal times, the only information I have is that it is normally considered after about 12 weeks and depending on the health of the patient whether it goes ahead at that time

My real reason for responding tonight is to ask you some questions, yes The BODACH ask questions as well!

    Seriously though my questions are.

How does mum get her dose of imodium

Does she get caplets - capsules - or liquid form?

If she gets either caplets or capsules do you know if anyone is checking the contents of her output?

I know not a pleasant task to have to do.

    My reason for the questions

Having an ileostomy, anything digested has a very short transit before it reaches the stoma and it could be that hard caplets are not being absorbed into the system and therefore are useless because the whole Caplet ends up in her bag.

I have observed both caplets and capsules in my bag and have had quite a few of my medications changed to a type that can be absorbed quickly.

If mum is not getting liquid imodium or Loperamide, and the hospital won't like this, ask for liquid to be prescribed to see if it makes any difference.

Please let me know if any difference is obtained.

Hi, I had an emergency stoma fitted last February,150 cms of small bladder were removed.. Have been in hospital 3 times with severe dehydration. I am now in hospital after having a reversal last Thursday (7 days ago) my bladder is now working after a fashion but in overtime mode, very very loose at least 10 or more times a day and it is really getting me down. Back on loperamide 8 a day, hope it works. Before the op I was on 24 a day and 10 sachets of Dioralyte in a litre of water. My surgeon says it will clear up, but how long? Any suggestions very welcome. Peter.
