Hi to all

I have my stoma for almost 3 months. Didn't have problems until 2 weeks ago when the leakings started.

The worst thing I am on holidays now and can't leave the house because the bag only lasts around 2h maximum it is always leaking and my skin around the stoma is very red now and feels like it is burning...

I use coloplast sensura mio bags, the stoma nurses sent me brava rings but it is not helping me. The bags don't stick properly to skin and the wound around the stoma is always wet...

Any advice please?

I am very depressed with all this...

Thank you!

    Hi magps

So sorry to hear about your leakage.

Speak to your stoma nurse about applying stoma powder to dry out the area around your stoma and try a barrier film wipe to see if these will help with adhesion.

You could also try some flange extenders.

But the main thing is to ensure that you cut the hole to correct size and that you measure your stoma at every change your stoma is still changing size.

Keep talking to your stoma care nurse and ask about changing pouch make and type to see if that would help

Are you using flat or convex pouches and are they one or two part versions

    Thank you for your reply.

I talked with the stoma nurses and they didn't tell me about the stoma powder or barrier film wipes, just sent me the rings and the problem I am away on holidays...

I am using flat one part pouches.

  • Hi Magps, I have had my loop ileostomy for 6.5 months now. I use exactly the same pouch as you. I had very bad red raw skin around the stoma for months a constant pinching feeling. I now know that is the enzymes in the discharge eating the skin. I went to the wound center and saw a RN specializing in stoma care. She recommended stoma powder. It did help, but the best help I've gotten is when I started using Convatec Eakin Cohesive seals. You will only get a good seal with proper skin prep.-very clean and dry, the seal will adhere to raw skin. The pinching, burning feeling disappeared, I am always alerted to an issue now by that feeling. We are all different in skin types and contours. I go three days between changes, leaks happen but minimally. I change in the morning before coffee etc. I definitely am no expert, I just thought I'd try to help. I know how discouraging this can be, my thoughts and at lot of others are with you.

Please give me the strength to change what I can, accept what I can't change and the wisdom to know the difference.

    Love and Respect Tony

  • Hi Tony,

Sorry you are having problems with your stoma bags and the irritation on your skin.

I have had my stoma for over a year and I do not lead anywhere near a normal life and my bag has burst in the middle of the hairdressers and I was heartbroken.

I would recommend you try flange extender, these will give you extra protection against leaks. Your stoma nurse or supplier will sort this out for you. Secondly I use Savlon on my skin around my stoma and this heals and stops the skin becoming sore. I told my stoma nurse this week I use this and she said it was good to use. So no worries there.

I know you are in a blind panic because I would be. But deep breaths and hold your head high. Your not doing anything wrong.

Fingers and toes crossed for you.

  • PS: Sorry I called you Tony. I don't know why. Guess it is a little bit of sunshine.

Thank you for all the replies.

I don't feel so lonely about this situation.

My main problem I am not in the UK now, I am on holidays in Portugal.

Icalled the stoma nurses and they sent coloplast brava rings but it was not sticking to my skin. I called again told me that without seing it was hard to help me.

Yesterday was the worst day, the skin was burning, very sore and was impossible to stick the bag.

Went to emergency last night and they gave me stomahesive convatec paste but it was so painful to apply it, was burning. And gave prednisolone tablets. When I arrive home the bag was leaking again...

Then called a 24h healthline and they told me to apply egg white to skin and leave it until dry maximum time possible and Then gaviscon. I was without the bag until6am and tried the bag and was there until 1pm.

I bought today new bags here with aloe vera from salts healthcare because the 30 bags from sensura mio did not work at all...

    Hi to all

    Thank you for the advices.

The leakings continue. Don't know what to do anymore.

Already changed bag, use brava skin barrier or secura, rings, expanders...and still have leakings.

    I am feeling so depressed.

The stoma nurses say can't help me or give me advice without seing me but I am just back to UK in 1 week. My holidays until now were awful...

Bless you dear. My mum had an ileostomy bag for over 6 months, right on the natural crease of her stomache so leaking was an absolute nightmare for her. 9 bag changes in one day caused her to be red raw & bleeding at the point the bag was supposed to stick to her. Only once did her bag stay on for 2 days in all that time. I sat there once waiting for her stoma to stop squirting b4 i could apply a new bag, and once it was applied it lasted all of 10 mins b4 it started to leak again & we had to repeat the saga again.  Nightmare. I just remember how fed up she looked. It broke my heart to watch her be so unhappy. I can only hope u do get it sorted out asap for ur own mental well being. They are an amazing thing but wen they dont work as they shud they can be the bain of ur life! Fingers crossed for you dear. Gud luck. Dont let the bugger get u down? Xxxx

This may help. Ask for some Brava elastic tape. Already cut. You stick them round the edge of the base plate.  Hubby won't leave the house unless he has these applied.  (We call them bananas due to the shape). He has a drainable bag. When he first went back to work he had to be brought home due to the leaking bag. Called his atoms nurse who took one look and gave him these. He has a hernia which makes sticking hard. No problems now though.  Life saver he calls them.Â
