Surviving Oesophageal Cancer

Hi , I’m new to this site but wanted to share my experience of living with oesophageal cancer. I realise that I’m one of the lucky ones in that my cancer was caught relatively early and was therefore operable.

I was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in February 2007 and after many tests and two sessions of chemotherapy I underwent an Ivor Lewis operation, which is major surgery to remove the cancer, and lasted around seven hours. I responded well throughout and remained only five days in intensive care before being moved to a general ward and released a week later.

Since then, I’ve continued to do well but suffer from dumping syndrome as a result of the surgery. This is an unpleasant side-effect that causes fatigue, sweating and nausea after eating. Also, I now have to have vitamin B12 injections every three months as my body can no longer process this essential vitamin.

All in all, I feel ok and have remained positive all the way through. I realise I’m extremely lucky and count my blessings every day.

I’ve read so many negative reports about this type of cancer so I felt I had to share something positive for those of you who have, or know someone with, Oesophageal cancer.

All the best

Crystal

  • Hi Grace

This is also very good news and I sincerely hope that the oncologist is going to recommend the radiotherapy, as this would gain control and further improve Jonathan’s eating capability.  I’m pretty sure Jonathan will be gaining weight with the fab food you’re cooking for him.  You too have a great day today.

    Love Crystal xx

  • Hi Mick

How lovely to see you again, but I’m sorry that this is a sad anniversary for you.  I’m just glad that you thought to come here to be amongst your friends and people that understand.

I can’t say I’ve ever heard of one-sided reflux Mick, but I know that when I lie on my scars it’s not a good idea.  I still sleep in an upright position because of reflux, although it doesn’t seem to occur as often now.

I too have been on a diet and have lost over a stone in one month.  The excess weight was pulling my scars even more and I was in constant pain with it.  Now though, I feel so much better.  I’m glad I’m not the only one to have put on excess weight, as my consultant said this has never been known before, so now I can tell him about you!  I’m also doing the beautiful Tai Chi exercises, which are brilliant for toning muscle, balance, controlled breathing and mind focussing.

I can’t wait to see pics of you in lycra and where you keep your pump.  Would that be an air-operated pump or a fluid injection pump?  Also, I know you love bikes, as I do, but you haven’t said what you’re getting?

So Mick, I hope you can manage to diet a little and keep doing what you’re doing.  You always make me smile so do come back again.

    Love Crystal xx

To All looking in, I hope your day or evening is a comfortable, pain-free and content one. xx

Marianne and Buzzie - glad to hear things are going well!

Clive is not doing too bad, but the breathlessness continues. His high calcium in his blood has gone back to normal on its own, wierd! the body is a strange thing, but makes for lots of ups and downs. The palliative care consultant told Clive he was quite exceptional, given he is still here not having had surgery, 16 months after diagnosis. So here's to all the fighters out there who are all exceptional too!

    Hello

A special thanks for all the good wishes.

I am very glad that Clive is surprising his palliative care consultant.  We have some fighting spirit in our husbands, don't we?

One of the many things I have been learning from the forum is that some OC cancer patients continually surprise the 'experts.'  I think we have a few who are re-writing the rules and, hopefully, radically changing the statistics.  Long may it continue.

Steve - a special thanks to you.  I hope all is going well with the 'Demon.  Being a 'carer' can be hard work but I have learned a lot about the nature of courage.

Brumigen - I hope you get this sorted out soon.  You have been doing so well. I wish I had some suggestions for you.  I imagine that there is still a lot of things changing with the healing process?  It is so nice to hear from you, having met you in 'Chat.'

Anyone heard from Leisha recently?  I hope things are ok.

Take care,  OC fighters and carers.

PS  Can those of you who are trying to lose a few pounds/kilos, send some up to us?  Jonathan is still in need of about two stone. Lol.

    Dear Team Members,

On my second cycle of  pre surgery chemo  (ECF) the fF part is going in continuously,  after the third cycle, surgery, but the surgeon is not using the Ivor-Lewis, he is opening up the length on my left side of my chest and stomach.  Not sure of the one sided reflux but would suspect that  the top part of the stomach would have removed and the sphincter that prevents reflux would have been removed and laying on the left side, gastric juices would run up the oesphagus.

    Regards Lou

Hi everyone, We have been to benidorm but back home again. Great to catch up on all the good news on here recently, what with lighter nights and spring round the corner it really is good to be home.

Ed is ok and we see oncologist tomorrow. our hol was rubbish as the weather was poor and 4 hour flight delay coming home. We got burgled but i guess none of it matters as we are ok and fighting on. I have to say i was feeling like a tent peg being hammered into the ground but once I got back on here my spirits lifted and I am off for a swim! You are all wonderful people and i couldnt manage without you, love leisha xxx

  • Hi Leisha

Welcome back!!  You’ve been missed and I’m sure lots of people around the forums noticed your absence.  I’m sorry that the weather in Spain was bad, but it could have been worse, you could have been here Lol.  And you got burgled as well!!  It’s a shame that there are mean spirits about, but you’re right, things are not important and it does highlight our priorities sometimes.

How did Ed get on with the oncologist and is he still following a similar treatment plan as before?  I hope you are ok Leisha and all is well at home. xx

  • Hi Lou

It’s good to hear from you and by the sounds of things you seem to be coping really well with the chemo.  It won’t be too long before your surgery so I know you’ll be keeping as fit as possible with your healthy attitude and sporty nature.  It seems the weather where you are has been absolutely awful, (for us Brits at any rate), of 40+ degrees!!  Anyway, I hope you’re managing to have fun and are still persevering with pasttimes such as languages and interpretation Hysterical

Take good care and keep us up to date. xx
