Hello,
I have Leukaemia.
I just wondered what other people's experiences were with getting a wig using a NHS voucher.
The wig companies that my hospital trust deal with are Aderans (London branch) and Browns (more hair now).
Has anyone had any experiences with these companies and can tell me about their experiences? How did anyone get on when dealing with these companies?
I have found that they have mixed reviews online.
Thanks for any information anyone can give me.
Hi Pipax
I am sorry to hear that you have leukaemia. I understand that hair loss is difficult to deal with.
I had endometrial cancer in 2022 and went through chemotherapy. My hospital had a wig lady and a hairdresser that came to the hospital once a week and would bring a selection of wigs to try on. There were also volunteers that came in to give advice on hair coverings, scarves etc. They were all very supportive. The lady was a previous nurse who struggled with alopecia and that made her more relatable as she had faced hair loss herself and was a regular wearer of wigs. The wig she had on was very natural looking and if she had not said it was a wig- you wouldn't have known.
After trying on different types to see what suited she would then order direct from a supplier. There would be the option- which I did- to use the voucher and then pay extra to upgrade the wig. I remember the lady encouraging me to see her before I lost any hair so she could see how I naturally looked. I also sent some photos before the appointment so she could bring a selection with her.
Her wigs were ordered through Rene of Pairs/amore.
So for me it was the personal touches and care that made a difficult thing more bearable.
We do have a Leukaemia forum on here that you may be interested in. I will pop a link here for you.

Having a diagnosis and treatment for cancer can be a stressful time and if talking things through would help then please do give the Support Line a call. They may also be able to advise on any other potential wig suppliers in your local area.
I wish you well with your treatment.
Jane
Thanks jane2511 for sharing your experience.
My hospital trust said that to use my NHS wig voucher Aderans and Browns are the companies I need to contact. That's why I was asking about people's experiences with those companies.
I need to check with my hospital to see if they have a wig person come in which you can see. I think that the companies are keen for people to go to their salons/shops so you can be dealt with there.
I would think that it is unlikely that you would be able to get wig for the value of the voucher and not gave to pay any extra.
Thanks for your help.
Take care.
