Stage 4 bowel cancer diagnosis

My husband has just been diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. There is cancer all through his liver as well as a large tumour in his bowel that the consultant is concerned is going to block his bowel. Not the news we wanted after the scans.
His treatment plan is a stoma operation on Tuesday so we don’t have to worry about the bowel blocking and then chemotherapy from the end of June.
The consultant explained that the cancer was incurable but that it depended how he reacted to the chemo. He asked if he was still going to be here in 2 months (our daughter is away for summer) and his response was “hopefully”!

I have seen the statistics that only 1/10 people with stage 4 bowel cancer are still alive in 5 years but need to hear about people who at diagnosis had cancer all through the liver but no other distant organs.

I will stay positive and hope and pray for a good outcome but need to know the reality of what we are facing.

Many thanks, from one very scared wife.

  • My husband had the same diagnosis.  Large bowel tumor, not blocking the passage yet, luckily. Metastasis over the liver. Has started pallative chemo, round 4. Side effects are skin rashes, mouth and lip soreness. Extreme Tiredness. He is a long term type 1 diabetic with lots of problems from that. Has copd, mild. As for life prognosis we haven't really been told anything. Could be upto 2 years. The chemo is bringing his blood markers down, which is a good sign. They have said they can give us a better life prognosis after the next lot of scans, when they can see the full picture of what the chemo is achieving. Lots of hospital appointments. The shock does eventually wear off, but everything remains scary. Just take one day at a time. Let people help where they can, which I find hard, as I have always been very independent lol, and take time to recharge your batteries.

  •   Thank you for your reply and I am so sorry you are dealing with this, it is awful. We are lucky to have really strong family and friends support but it is terrifying.
How often has your husband had chemo? I know you said it was the fourth round but does he get it every 2/3/4 weeks? I don’t know yet what chemo my husband will get and I know they are taking biopsies tomorrow when they fit the stoma and they will help determine that.
Did your husband not need a stoma? I feel it is just another complication to deal with especially when the chemo is starting so soon after it at the end of June. I fear it will take a bit of getting used to for him both physically and emotionally.
I hope the next scan results as good for you both and you get some positive news.
