Childcare with terminally ill husband

Hi lovely people

I'm in desperate need of direction on where to get financial help with childcare for my under 2.

My husband is terminally ill and we are at appointments constantly. I've given up work to care for him and our 2 children but I'm using our universal credit to pay for nursery for our little one. We get no funding until he's 2 and I'm quickly running out of money.

DWP said we're getting the maximum for our situation but nursery costs are thousands. Especially recently because my husband is having radiotherapy every day. My mum.in law helps but can't every day as shes elderly.

Any advice on charities or who to contact to help with these costs? I'm drowning!

Thank you all

X

  • Hi

Im sorry you are this position, xaring for a terminally ill partner is exhausting enough without young children

Are you getting carers allowance or is your husband getting any disability benefits. Macmillan looked ino everything for us to make sure we were getting everything we could.

Another avenue, do you still have childrens centres where you are? In my LA, we can sometimes fund or part fund nursery fees for children under 2 in exceptional circumstances and yours are definitely that. Worth a look maybe?

I hope you can get some help. X

  • Thank you so much for this information. I went to our local family hub this morning and they're getting in touch with the childcare funding team. Hopefully we will be eligible for early funding. I'll keep you posted xx

  • There's no funding in my council, I just got this reply:

We are sorry to learn about your current circumstance, and the challenges you have been facing.

With your younger child’s age, 21 months, the only available funding is for working parents.

    Terrible!

  • Yes it is shocking especially as you gave up work. Presumably your husband is not technically still employed ( but taking sick leave for example). Is he getting PIP at the highest rate?

Try macmillan just in case there is something else. There may be other things or places you can apply to. Your child will be entitled to 15 hours when they reach 2, but if there birthday is after march 31st, they wont get it until September, and it sounds like you need it now.

Just an aside, there may be lical support for travel costs to radiotherapy.. this would have cost us £48  per day if we had not had not had a volunteer service to help.

  • I know, it's truly shocking! Yes I've been working up until this point and so has my husband.

I'll contact Mcmillan tomorrow and I've left a journal message on UC to see if we are entitled to anything else.

  • Would your husband be entitled to ill health retirement?

  • Could you be entitled to attendance allowance.its not means tested & its fast tracked if terminal & have got less than 12 months to live. The higher rate is £110 per week. Our local hospital Macmillan team completed the forms online for us.

  • AA is only for people of pension age. Before that it would be PIP.

  • I didn't know about this attendance allowance or early retirement. He's 47.  I'll look into both, thank you!

  • Yes he gets PIP but I'll look into I'll health retirement thanks
