Looking for a bit of advice

Hello,

I'm currently caring for my mum who is undergoing chemotherapy for SCLC. She found weeks 1 and 2 quite tough going, but after a change of anti-sickness medication is a fair bit better in week 3. Possible well enough for me not to be here looking after her.

The problem is I'm a teacher, so going back to school (I'm in Scotland) would mean exposing myself to Covid in a medium way prior to coming to move into mum's again for the next round of chemo. Therefore my current plan is to be carer for up to all 12 weeks of the 4 cycles she is going to have.

I wondered if this seemed like the only way to do this caring to other people or whether there is a different solution and I've missed it?

Mum is 90 miles away from where I live, and I'm her only son. She isn't married and has no partner, so as regards live in care, it's pretty much me.

Thanks for any help,

Robert

  • Hi , I'm sorry to read about your mum and the predicament it puts you in. If she has been referred to Macmillan, she might be able to get support from the nurses, if not it might be an idea to ask her GP to refer her, but the only live in help I've heard of during chemo is private. It sounds as though, as you say, that if she is 'a fair bit better' that she might not need you there, but the choice has to be yours. The only other thing I could suggest is calling the helpline, on 0808 808 0000 to see if they can come up with anything.  I'm sure there will be other members coming along with suggestions too.
