Hi all,
I was after some advice on shielding and if any of you are not fully following the guidance. I am caring for my husband who has incurable cancer (ocular melanoma, with liver and bone mets) and as he is due to start Cyberknife treatment and is also on targeted immunotherapy he is on the extremely vulnerable group. Since we received the ‘letter’ we have stayed in separate bedrooms and stayed 2 metres apart while at home as we struggled to get a home delivery, I collect his meds and walk our young dog. We have now finally got a priority slot and sorted deliveries on everything else’s except the dog walks. I know lots of people who are not sleeping apart and we long to have contact again.. with his incurable diagnosis we don’t know if he has 6 months or 6 years and we don’t want to miss out on any more time than we need to! Your help and advice would be greatly received!! Xx
Hi RunnerChick, I know there are people to do the shopping and dog walking for shielded locals in our area. Click the link for information on councils and shielding in various places. I couldn't advise you either; it's not for me to say but if there is someone locally it would make life easier for you. Good luck.
Hugs,
LoobyLou

Hi there,
My husband also received the ‘letter’ with regard to shielding as he has terminal Cholangiocarcinoma and has also a had solid organ transplant;
I took the decision to totally isolate with him so there is only very minimal risk, we don’t need to do social distancing because I go nowhere and don’t open the front door to anyone. I don’t leave the house at all except to sit in the garden or to accompany him to the hospital. We get his medications delivered (cost £24 for 3 deliveries a month for 12 months), and all food is delivered too.
Like you, we don’t know how long he has, and he gets very depressed at the thought of maybe never leaving the house again but we are together In this and hopefully will come out the other side!
I think we all have to do what works for us, and I’m sure you are doing your very best for your husband. Stay safe.
Thanks everyone for your comments. They are really helpful and have helped us to look at our situation and what to do next. We are now in a position to get food, dog food delivered and a volunteer to collect my husbands medication so we almost feel ready to return to normal, well at home anyway.. We just need to work out how to stop the food parcel arriving each week, as we do not need it and feel someone more deserving needs it more than we do!
Stay safe everyone x
To stop the food parcel, I believe you just need to go back on the website (details of which were in your original shielding letter) and amend to say that you no longer require assistance. So glad you are feeling a little more settled.
I hope not, because I have just stopped the food parcels ... however I’m pretty sure the priority access is allocated because you are on the Government’s Most Vulnerable list and logically should continue.
I would be interested to see how you get on now you have done this. We learnt that another couple turned the parcels away but after they did this twice the person delivering them said after two refusals they take you off the list. We need the priority shopping but they need to give the parcels for those struggling more then my husband and I am. X
I went back onto the website and re-registered to say that assistance with food was not needed, and the parcel which was due on Thursday did not arrive. I checked my Tesco online shopping and still have access to priority delivery slots which is a weight off my mind and I feel happier that the food parcel can go to someone whose need is greater.
hope that helps
