Hi, my name is Jennifer and I am new to this group. I am currently helping my dad look after my mum, she has terminal cancer and we are all aware that we may not have her for long. She is steadily losing weight and we are struggling to manage her care. I just wanted to ask if this is normal? At the moment we are trying to manage a fine line between her constantly feeling / being sick and not eating, to her having dihorea, but still being able to eat without feeling ill. I noticed last week that she had dihorea, so told my dad that maybe we should give her tablets that she has to make her stools hard. But that seems to have taken her the other way, now she is being/ feeling sick. But not having had any movement in her bowels for two to three days.
Only last week she was perfectly happy sat stuffing her face with hot cross buns, to her feeling sick and getting upset that she's ill all the time last night.
We don't seem to be getting any advice from her medical team. I just need to know if there is anything we can be doing to make her more comfortable, is or has anyone else been through this?
Thanks Jennifer
Hi and a warm welcome to Carers, although I'm sorry to hear about your mum. I've linked to the recipes booklet which might have some new ideas. Yes, it's not at all unusual for weight loss and sickness. If your mum's bowels don't clear soon, please contact her GP as she will need help for that to avoid extra pain. Finding a balance is not easy but I hope the booklet will give you some ideas, if she is able to eat and drink. I'd contact her specialist nurse and ask for advice too. Also, if your mum has not already been referred to the local hospice, it would be a good idea to ask her GP to refer her. Once the referral is made you can phone them for advice too; they can provide a lot of support in her own home as well.
Love and hugs,

Hi,
Thanks for your reply, and thankyou for the recipes. Its not really food we are struggling with, she is on steroids to give her an appetite, and me and my sisters have been plying her with lots of goodies aswell as salads and fruit, and my dad has been doing her meals
.
He has been speaking to st lukes hospice in Sheffield, and western park cancer hospital where she usually goes for treatment and check ups, but we dont seem to be getting much advice despite my dad telling them that she is not really improving.
We are well aware at 81 years old that we may not have much time left, but it would just be more beneficial for us for somebody to tell us how it is if you understand what i mean?
Even though she haf dihorea last week, she seemed to be alot happier and stronger, i would rather have that than her feeling and being sick all the time.
We recently moved them to a bungalow to make life a bit easier for them and it breaks my heart that she can't enjoy it.
Thanks Jennifer
Hi Jennifer, yes, I do understand what you mean, it's awful when you can't get the advice you need. The only other suggestion I could make is to contact PALS at her hospital to see if they can come up with any advice. I really feel for you with moving them to a bungalow and your mum not being able to enjoy it. Cancer is a horrible disease; I hope you get some advice soon.
Love and hugs,
LoobyLou
