Morning,
My partner has stage 2b bowel cancer and has been receiving chemotherapy for the last 16 months. The tumour continues to either remain the same size or grow. Due to the COVID outbreak they are putting a hold on his treatment until the pandemic is mostly over. I am so worried that the tumour is going to progress and spread. Is there anyone who can reassure me the cancer won’t grow too much?
I obviously know there are many people who are much worse off than him and I feel I’m being selfish and ignorant. I am just very worried.
Is there anyway you can challenge that decision? A move to self administered holding treatment perhaps in tablet form? It seems to defy logic. I know how difficult it is to assert oneself when you are grateful for the help that has gone before. Seek a second opinion by directly researching and emailing consultants, they often respond. Be factual rather than apologetic, be open that you are seeking advice. I fully understand the additional anxiety you must be feeling. Google is your friend, get busy, l know it's hard but it's what carers have to do.
Hi and a warm welcome to Carers. While I appreciate the very good advice given by others, please avoid Google like the plague at the moment, it will likely make you worry more. You are not selfish, nor are you ignorant and of course you're worried, because you care. But we are not permitted to give medical advice and giving 'reassurance' would be trying to do just that. That said, stage 2 is in itself a reassurance since it hasn't spread to other parts of the body. You could call his specialist nurse for reassurance and you might like to pop into the bowel cancer group here for colon and rectum and here for small bowel cancer where you will find a lot of extra support.
Love and hugs,
LoobyLou

I simply meant that 'Google' is a good place to look up contact details for consultants secretaries not for amateur internet medical advice. Anyone who has been refused continuity of treatment is entitled to seek a polite alternative opinion from a qualified person, in this case an alternative Oncologist. My late husband and l did exactly that and as a result the ,'gap' in his treatment was reviewed . I made no comment on how 'reassuring' a particular stage is as l am not qualified and wouldnt dream if offering such advice even if it were allowed.
I would guess they have made a clinical
decision based on fact there is greater risk to life from covid 19 Infection at chemo unit then from delaying chemo and is probably right decision as Hospitals are extreme high risk to catch it. Delaying chemo isn’t always a huge issue in stage 2 cancers. It’s often postponed in patients when they get infections etc anyway .
Hi Trentlady, my comment was not directed at you but as a gentle warning to avoid googling the illness nor have I suggested that you were giving medical advice, that comment was about myself as a champ. However, I could have been clearer in stating not googling for information on the illness as it can only serve to worry someone already distressed. No offence intended.
Hugs,
LoobyLou
