Members of the Online Community have shared how helpful getting outside and walking has been for their mental health and wellbeing, even if it’s only a few steps around the garden or a few quiet moments in nature.

This thread is a space for anyone in the Online Community to share those moments. You’re welcome to:

  • Share when you’ve been for a walk or spent some time outside
  • Talk about how you were feeling before or after
  • Share encouraging thoughts or quotes
  • Post photos from your walk (while staying safe and not sharing identifying details)

There’s no pressure, targets, or competition. The idea is simply to encourage one another, share the small moments that help, and enjoy some of the wellbeing benefits that can come from fresh air, movement, and time spent outdoors.

  • Beautiful dog

we love our walks with our dog ….. no holidays booked would love to go ….

my husband was diagnosed with bile duct cancer 2025, had recent scan, was told today they have found a growth, having PET scan … we are so scared…. he is 65… I can’t cope with all of this seeing him suffer.

  • Hello

We have had rescue dogs all our married life and after we lost our last one one of our daughters who has had 3 rescue greyhounds suggested one - and we've now had him 7 months. He's brilliant, loving and more to the point gets me out 3/4 times a day (he even enjoys "pub dog day").

Why not add your post to the Bile Duct group, I see you have posted there and may get advice from people who have gone through what your husband is going through now. Here's the link you need:

I'm sorry if cancer has brought you here, but it's positive that you're wanting to talk about how you're feeling. Lots of people find it can really help to share their experiences and connect with people in similar circumstances.

If you feel comfortable sharing what's brought you here, we can help direct you to the right forums for you.

This conversation thread is a place for members to talk about how getting outside and walking has been for their mental health and wellbeing, even if it’s only a few steps around the garden or a few quiet moments in nature. We'd love to hear from you if you have experiences to share?

If you'd like to talk more generally about how you're feeling, you might want to post in our Emotional support forum here. Join the forum, then click + / +new to start your new message. There's some help available here when you need it.

  • Just about to go outside to feed the plants in the garden. It's not warm but I know I'll feel better outside than in. Apparently there is such a thing as Sunday evening melancholy! (Thought it was just me!)

  • Hello

I think being outside - whatever you are doing - can bring joy to your life. We have a small(ish) garden but we are lucky that a few hundred yards from home we are out into the countryside. As we have a dog I am out everyday and the changes everyday in the hedgerows of our local lane amaze me.

Although I am semi-retired (I am Self Employed so work when I want to) I do find everyday different - you see the same people Monday to Friday and weekends are different - but honesty  - I have never thought of Sunday evening as being melancholy, it's just the end of a day and I am ready to face the next day.

Even living in the grim North West - I find there's always something to be thankful for when I am out - the birds, the plants and trees and even the animals round here including foxes, deer and a very healthy rabbit population.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Brian,  I am with you about being out and walking in nature.  We are also lucky we live near a railway walk, a woods and near the canals.  I walk my four dogs in the woods every day.  I have started using the Merlin bird app and trying to identify different birds.  What bugs me is the litter especially after the weekend.  I am forever picking up litter.  I call them the weekend walkers. Anyway mainly it is clean and I do appreciate living here.

  • Hi everyone

What a great thread this is! I am not long into this community but what a find!!

I am Stage 4 Prostate Cancer and am involved with that a forum which is a great place too (thanks Millibob!!).

I too enjoy getting out and about.  I said to my wife only yesterday that the exercise routine I do (weights, indoor bike etc) is for the body BUT the walking is for the MIND.

I am so lucky where I live, in a suburb of Birmingham ,which has numerous parks within easy walking distance. I particularly enjoy the differences between them, some hilly, some flat, some with sports facilities and others with picnic spots.  I particularly like the nearby boating lake, the one with a fishing pond; although the cycle polo in one park is very intriguing to watch!

I find a small backpack, a foldable seat pad and a flask of tea a great accompaniment - but am tempted as two of my local parks have small cafes as well - living the dream!!!!

I do look out for wildlife on my walks and have seen (and heard) woodpeckers in the local park, a heron or two in the parks with water and at this time of year goslings and ducklings on the water.   It was especially pleasant the other day to see how proud a couple of young lads were with their catch of the day at the fishing pond - a good size carp - which they then safely released back.  So much for youngsters being stuck to their phones!!

We are off to Perthshire next week and I am looking forward to being by the side of the River Tay and enjoying the fantastic scenery and some (flat) walks - no Munro this time I am afraid..

    All the best
