Many people in the Online Community have shared how helpful getting outside and walking has been for their mental health and wellbeing, even if it’s only a few steps around the garden or a few quiet moments in nature.
This thread is a space for anyone in the Online Community to share those moments. You’re welcome to:
There’s no pressure, targets, or competition. The idea is simply to encourage one another, share the small moments that help, and enjoy some of the wellbeing benefits that can come from fresh air, movement, and time spent outdoors.
Hello Dylan
Cracking idea for a thread - I will start you off.
So I am a 70 year old with Stage 3 Prostate Cancer and have been on Hormone Therapy for close on 4 years. One side effect (of many) is fatigue so walking is something I try and do as much as possible.
Last week me, the wife and dog had a holiday in Pembrokeshire-my idea to walk as much of the coastal path as I could.
The first day we walked Dinas Head - a coastal path that started with a 170 metre assent!! (And I thought coastal paths were flat!!).
The next day we stuck to the flat bits although we had issues with the tide being in!

Our “retired athlete” was more than impressed with the 2 mile flat of Newport Sands.

What I would say is that we all felt better for a change of scenery, the extra exercise and just being at one with nature.
As a foot note my wife now checks the walks not only for distance now but height climbed. I just look for a dog friendly pub at the end of the walk.
Its not about the distance or speed-it’s getting out there and doing something. Enjoy.
Best wishes - Brian.

I would add, just try to listen to the birds singing. Early morning or in the evening. Its so lovely and can really lift ones mood.
I'm coming up to 70 in late July, lung cancer in 2014 then prostate cancer in 2016 treated but recurred 2025. Now on indefinite treatment.
Being lucky I've been in Lanzarote for 2 weeks, going home tomorrow.
Just looked at my fitbit data an have done something like 17 miles walking on the seafront in that time. A couple of beers afterwards were the perfect reward.
Happy days if you're lucky, I encourage you to enjoy them! I remain forever grateful for my good fortune.

Hello worriedmum
Yes, I agree with you. Indeed I have the Merlin Birdsong App on my mobile 'phone. It's good to just stop, listen to the birdsong and let the app tell you what types are around you. The App is very good and free to download.
Best wishes - Brian.

Hello Lee
Not as far as I am aware. When I downloaded the app a couple of years ago it was free. You did have to give an e-mail address though. Mine’s still working and I haven’t paid anything.
I am out and about now - I will have a look. later.
Best wishes-Brian.

What a good idea, Millibob. Thanks for sharing those pics! One of my favourite things to do outdoors is explore the coastal paths.
I started using the Merlin bird app last year. I've really enjoyed learning more about our local birds. I can confirm that the app is free to use
