Are you having trouble sleeping?

Sleep problems may be caused by how you’re feeling emotionally, or as part of the side effects for cancer treatment. If you find it hard to have a good sleep, you’re not alone. The Online Community is here to support you 24/7.

“Getting a cancer diagnosis is extremely stressful, and that brings a whole load of emotions, and lack of sleep certainly does not help. I think many of us have periods of insomnia. I experienced a long period of not sleeping. I could go off to sleep quite quickly, but after an hour I would find myself wide awake again, and would spend the rest of the night getting frustrated because I couldn't sleep."

  • Thanks Gill, Last night I went to sleep for one hour! Got up for about half and hour and luckily got back to sleep about 1 through to 7.30 am so definitely improving.

I don't have a cd player in the bedroom so tend to use the phone.

Glad you enjoy the classical stuff thanks for your support

  • So 'Elvis is back in the building '!!!

  • Great news Stew.  Fingers crossed you'll be getting the recommended eight hours at this rate and should feel much better for it.

I like many genres of music and used to be into Northern Soul in my teens.  I still 'keep the faith'!  Classical has its hooks deeply embedded though.

    Sleep well tonight.  Fingers crossed.

  • Brilliant!  I'm definitely all shook up I didn't think that one up.

Hey, I might have found my eureka moment.  H went up to bed after we got home from hospital today and I was in my chair, gawping at the telly.  I was trying to remember a dream I had in the early hours, that woke me up incidentally, and the next thing I knew, H was back downstairs and more than two hours had passed by!

I'm wide awake now but I'm going to put my new tactic into practice in a bit.  The problem is I'll be trying this time so it might not work.  Watch this space...

  • Hi Brian and anyone else who is awake at silly O’clock! I’m sorry to burst your bubble but in the Living with Incurable Cancer Forum, we have had this on and off for years. Night Owl was one of the titles. I am a night owl myself and am awake most nights (due to nerve pain). Now though I just put any comment on the Daily Chat which also includes night. You can go into any Thread and find out when the last post or reply was. Also people who live n USA and Sustralia are awake at this time because our night is their day.

There is usually someone awake to talk to!

  • Good (early) morning Annette.

I'm awake and I'm a very silly woman as we've got an appointment at 10 am!

No matter, as this is par for the course unfortunately.

Sorry to hear you're in pain.  Do you take strong meds to counter it or sleeping tablets or an alternative drug?  It must be hellish, whatever you have to do to get by.

There's an Australian lady on another forum I post on and I never gave it thought, until you mentioned it, that she's in a different time zone.  Whenever I see her username pop up now, I'll be mentally working out what time it is in her neck of the woods.

I did nod off for a couple of hours a while back but gusting winds woke me this time - the curse of being a light sleeper I suppose.  That and getting older.  My dad was just the same and it really narked my mum, as him boiling the kettle up at 3 am would then wake her!  Happy days...

    Nice chatting to you.

  • Hi Gill, I check the forum when I’m awake but if nothing much is happening, II go to my free Jigsaw Appp and spend quite a lot of time doing jigsaws! It is a good way to pass the time in the middle of the night if you are not sleeping. Then I move onto free Word puzzle Apps to see how many I can do to beat the computer! You can play against the computer too which makes things more interesting. Like Scrabble, Chess etc. the best free jigsaw app is called Jigsaw Collection HD by Veraxen and I have never had to buy a jigsaw. Because they give you a lot which are free. The thing I did pay for was to take away the adverts and at that time it was a one of payment of £4.99 & well worth it. Not sure how much it is now as that was about 9 or 10 years ago near the start of my cancer journey!

I hope your appointment went ok this morning and you managed to get up in time! Talk soon.

  • Hey Annette.  Good to hear from you again!

Yes, we got to the appointment in good time and it went ok, thanks.

I love jigsaws too, but I use my phone so it's all a bit fiddly.  Instead, I use it to play patience/solitaire and can spend ages on it till the battery starts running down and bleeps at me.

Jigsaws reminded me of a time, many moons ago, when I was trying to complete a 1000 piece one.  I had it on a large board on the living room floor and was pleased with my progress.  One evening, after a long day at work, I was getting stuck in when the front door opened and my BiL came in followed by his huge rottweiler, Rocky.  The hound bounded towards me and scrambled the pieces all over the place, effectively trashing all my work.  BiL looked sheepish and my face was tripping me!  I shoved all the scattered pieces back in the box and shelved it.  Thanks for that, Rocky - not!

Hey, I love that quote below your posts.  Where does it come from?

My poor fella, he's the one who's ill, has been pretty low recently, so I wrote it down and showed it to him.  I said we should try and use it to kind of stabilise our days - not dwell on what's gone, but concentrate on the gift we have now, that he's still here.  I think it made him feel a lot better so thank you, Annette, for providing inspiration.

We all need help sometimes, and I got a lot from members on the Head and Neck cancer forum tonight, too.

You're a great bunch of people in the community xx

  • Hi Gill, Ilove all these sayings, to be honest I can’t remember where that one came from but when I read it, I was at the start of my cancer journey and it really triggered something in me. I was thinking no one is guaranteed tomorrow, so live today as best you can!

Well, can you believe for the first time, ️in a long time, I actually slept for 4 and a half hours!!

I did like your jigsaw story! I Remember getting a carper sort of thing that the jigsaw pieces stuck to and you could fold away when not using it! It was great. I folded it and put it behind the couch, out of harms way! You should definitely invest in an iPad or tablet, they are amazing! Talk soon.

  • Hi Gill, the quote was made by Eleanor Roosevelt I believe. The full quote is “ Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift-that’s why we call it the present”

I spent quite a lot of time when I was first diagnosed looking for inspirational quotes and putting them in a notebook I could refer back to. I found it really helpful.
