Are you having trouble sleeping?

Sleep problems may be caused by how you’re feeling emotionally, or as part of the side effects for cancer treatment. If you find it hard to have a good sleep, you’re not alone. The Online Community is here to support you 24/7.

“Getting a cancer diagnosis is extremely stressful, and that brings a whole load of emotions, and lack of sleep certainly does not help. I think many of us have periods of insomnia. I experienced a long period of not sleeping. I could go off to sleep quite quickly, but after an hour I would find myself wide awake again, and would spend the rest of the night getting frustrated because I couldn't sleep."

  • Thank you for replying. No meds prescribed as I'd not had headaches or other symptoms. "Something" on brain showed up on mri scan while being done to check ears/hearing/nerves, all of which ok. Had couple paracetamol a few hours ago.

  • Hi again. Sorry, there's a bit of a delay on my phone but don't take any more paracetamol than the prescribed dose as it may be worrying that's causing the pain/discomfort.

Maybe give them a call and tell them, just to put your mind at ease? Fingers crossed that 'something' won't be anything sinister. Have you got any support at home or someone to talk to about your problem? Talking to someone close often helps hon xxx

  • I live alone, which I've always enjoyed until now. Don't worry I'll not be taking any more tablets tonight, I'm very careful about things like that. Just typical to feel like this in the middle of the night at the weekend when everywhere is closed. If need be I can phone NHS 111 but don't feel ill, just not right when head on pillow. But as you say can just be worry that gets every little feeling out of proportion.

  • And thank you, helps to communicate

  • Oh I know that feeling, but at least there's 111 although I doubt you'll need them right now.

Before you posted, I was watching cat and dog videos on YouTube in an attempt to drift off - they weren't working! Have you found any way to get off to sleep that works? If so, maybe go for it, or watch telly. If you find something really boring it could do the trick. I've put Unexplained caught on camera, trashy enough to send me off hopefully xxx

  • I've been trying relaxing music, radio or audiobooks, or just reading! Though fell asleep on the sofa in front of tv earlier on for short while, so that's an option without lying down. I hope you can get to sleep too. Thanks for chatting with me

  • No problem love, as I've tried lots of things to get to sleep. My trouble is it catches up with me and I drop off in the afternoon, then it ruins getting to sleep like normal folks do.

Well I'm wide awake and happy to chat xxx

  • Still awake here too. Know I'll be useless tomorrow without a good night sleep, but so be it. Will try & get some support via Macmillan or NHS 111 in the morning to help me manage better until I see the neurologist on Weds. It's all been a shock over the last couple of weeks with scans & too easy to get anxious. In daytime it's easier to keep busy & not as aware of feelings in my head lying down. And then at night mind goes into overdrive.

  • I also grind my teeth at night or when stressed so that's probably not helping me! But wear a tooth guard to save my teeth, but know it can cause tension around jaw etc. But I do feel quite calm, still have calming music playing on Spotify in the background.

  • It certainly does. It's because you're scared love, and our natural instincts are to be alert when under duress, hence your mind won't allow you to shut down and sleep. So, that's a great idea to call the helpline in a few hours' time and see what they suggest. I've got myself into a comfy position and put a horror film on. It sounds bonkers but it might just work. Try to relax as best you can, don't dwell on Wednesday and think of other things, really concentrating on them. Your mind will become occupied with something else. Hoping you can sleep soon my lovely xxx
