Are you having trouble sleeping?

Sleep problems may be caused by how you’re feeling emotionally, or as part of the side effects for cancer treatment. If you find it hard to have a good sleep, you’re not alone. The Online Community is here to support you 24/7.

“Getting a cancer diagnosis is extremely stressful, and that brings a whole load of emotions, and lack of sleep certainly does not help. I think many of us have periods of insomnia. I experienced a long period of not sleeping. I could go off to sleep quite quickly, but after an hour I would find myself wide awake again, and would spend the rest of the night getting frustrated because I couldn't sleep."

  • Hi Sarah. We've had a nice weekend thanks and yes, it's come much cooler over the past week. I don't want to put the heating on yet either, so we're doing ok with just a convector heater in the room for now.

I'm not too bad with cold weather as like yourself, I grew up with an open coal fire and two paraffin heaters for warmth, and thick ice on the inside of the windows that me and my sister used to scratch drawings on. We didn't have an indoor bathroom or toilet either, so it was a tin bath in the kitchen on Fridays and a ceramic po' under the bed for us kids. I loved every second of it but didn't know anything other, until we moved when I was seven into a new build.

My phone was altering bosies to bodies til I sorted it - you made me laugh with your comment to Eddie. Bar the car journeys, hope you enjoyed your trip down south my lovely xxx

  • Hahaha, yes it was meant to be bosies, and your right again, I've not long been back in Donny and it's bitter. Awww I  agree with you about open fires too, they werewonderful growing up, when we bought our 1st house it had 2 lovely coal fires, but with Lesley and I working silly hours and 3 little ones in the house, they had to goCry, We hated the gas fires; so put central heating in. Always meaning to put the coal fires back in, but other things took priority.and I remember the freezing windows which all had a draft and rattled in the wind. Awww Sarah if you need the heating on then you must put it on, a cold house isn't good for our health and often means more maintenance bills for the house, so not a money saver. I'm again agreeing with you my friend, travelling is getting harder, I share the driving, lots of stops and when I can use the train. I  hope your trip was lovely and worth the discomfort.

    love Eddie and family xx

  • Hi Gill

My sister and I used to make patterns in the ice on the window in our bedroom, I remember those times so well! I think I should have been born somewhere warmer than Scotland- I feel the cold something shocking!

We did have an indoor loo thank goodness-don’t think I could have coped with one outside. Sunday night was bath night and no hairdryers in those days, so we’d be sat in front of the coal fire, turning round from time to time to make sure our hair was all dry before bed.

We were visiting family yesterday on OH’s side-a bit sad going there for the first time since we were down for a funeral in September (cousin) but his wife is doing so well and that was good to see. His daughter, grandson and 2 little great grandchildren came to see us so there was a lot of laughter and toys everywhere! Oh, and a lot of crumbs!

    Sarah xx

  • Hi Eddie, lovely to hear from you.  Sounds like you are having lots of fun.  We are ok here, thankfully the fires have gone now and the nights are drawing in, not cold though so that's great.

The route your brother is doing is all fabulous, it's such a beautiful wild coastline but can get quite foggy and misty.  We like Arrifana and also Porto Covo is a lovely village especially this timWinkof year when everything is quiet..  Monchiqur is worth a day trip as long as the weather is clear, the views are incredible.  We actually live in the Costa Vicentina natural parc so if he needs anytWinkng whilst here givenus a shout Wink xx

  • your reply to Harrisonsmum  was just about as best you could do

What a place to be in 5 weeks old and they need to cope

have asked if they can keep in touch

thanx for replying - but like you feel helpless what do we say to parents with a 5 week old baby - that is so early diagnosis

lets hope forever that little lad will be ok

thanx for reply & I am sure everyone will send bucket loads of luck and love to this family -especially there little new born

  • Hi Sian, it's lovely to hear from you too, my friend, and happy to hear all's pretty good in Portugal again, and those awful fires are over, I live in Yorkshire and we had a moorland fire burning for 10 weeks, covering 30 square miles, awful, but no danger to us, so I'm full of admiration for how you coped.

My brother sends his thanks for your help, as do I, that was really good of you to do that for a complete stranger, and it's good to hear it's lovely and warm there, lucky you, I'm just back from the Scilly's where it was mild, but it's freezing here in Yorkshire, but I  do have 6 grandkids to take my mind of it. I hope all your furry and feathered family are well too.

    love Eddie and family xx

  • Hi Jann, it's heartbreaking hearing these things, isn't it, but I've got everything crossed it isn't cancer, and there's no need for thanks my friend, that's what we're all here for, to help each other. Well Jann, I hope your still enjoying some warm weather in Spain, as it's freezing here, so off to bed for me soon. So Jann, what kind of day have you had my friend, hopefully lots of beautiful scenery and fresh air.

    love Eddie and family xx

  • Evening Eddie, Jann and Sarah, if you're still awake.

Sorry guys but I'll have to bail out tonight as I'm jiggered and blaming it on the clocks palaver, knocking me out of synch.

We were watching part 3 of a drama on telly when I woke with a start around half ten - drama finished but I hadn't done OH's care. I got all done but my eyes are like lead so I'll be sensible for once, and get back to sleep.

Hoping everyone's had a good day and manages to get a sound sleep. Sending lots of love and hugs and will see you all tomorrow. Night night guys xxx

  • Sleep well my friend xx

  • Good morning everyone.

I'm so happy I've found this thread

I too don't sleep well and I'm up at all sorts of times

I'm naturally up at 4 am any way because of my job.

But I haven't worked for 8 months due to surgery and ill side effects of treatment.

I just wish I could have a good night sleep.
