Hi everyone,
Firstly it’s great to find a support network with people who understand.
So I am 40 and found a lump in my left breast just before Christmas. Turned out to be invasive ductal cancer. I had the lump removed on the 1st Feb and was recovering well. Yesterday I went for the results, I have to have another surgery, something I was told not many have to have but I got unlucky. They now need to remove 40mm so this means I have two options, take tissue from under my arm to fill it out or have a breast reduction on both. How does someone decide this? I appreciate it isn’t the worst news as it hasn’t spread to my lymph nodes but I just don’t know how to deal with it. I live on my own so COVID has made this even worse, last year my dad found out he had blood cancer and is still receiving treatment, the year before my mum passed away from ovarian cancer so I’ve really had enough of cancer.
Any words of wisdom or just a friendly hello would be greatly appreciated, thank you and stay safe.
Hi Genie40 welcome to the forum. Im not surprised that you have had enough of Cancer it has certainly been about more than it should have been for you and your family.
Believe it or not having a second surgery can be more common than you think as it depends on what they take out during surgery then send of to the pathology lab. They are always keen to have good margins around any lumps and they clearly haven't got that with yours hence the repeat surgery.
I wish I could be more able to advise you what to do but that has to be your choice. I suppose it depends on how you would feel with one breast smaller than the other? Or having a bigger crevice in your underarm which may to be so visible? Or you opt for the breast reduction on both and how would that leave you feeling?
I wish you well for whatever decision you make none of which are easy for you.
Meantime Im sure a hug wouldn't go amiss so Im sending some huge big ones your way for now. xxx
Hi Genie 40,
I am sorry you are having to go through all of this. As you say though, good that it hasn't spread to your lymph nodes. I had to have quite a few operations last year, as they kept finding more cancer than they originally thought. As Granny 59 says, it is really common for people to have to have more than the one op, - I don't think they really know what they are dealing with, until they start taking the lump/s out. It is really hard to make decisions on what to do, but personally I would go for anything that is going to give you greater symmetry. Having your boobs messed with is not nice, - but if they can both look the same at the end of it all, - I do think that it will make you feel better.
It is tough too, when you have already had cancer in your family that has played havoc. I lost my mother to breast cancer and other woman in the family have also had it. You certainly sound as though you have had your fill !!
Take care, stay safe, keep strong, - and sending lots of love,
Sukki 17.
Thank you for the reply, hugs are very welcome at the moment, hopefully get lots in June!
Ive got my appointments tomorrow to run through both procedures where they will show me pictures etc so hopefully that will help with the decision.
i wasn’t expecting a second surgery because I was told that it’s quite rare but it seems the more people I talk to this isn’t the case.
Just want to be at least 70% happy with my decision xx
Hi Sukki 17,
Thank you for the reply. I’m sorry to hear about your mum, cancer just doesn’t care what havoc it gives out to families who have been through enough.
i hope you are now clear of treatments. I really appreciate your comments on this decision, it’s just not something I thought I’d have to face, turning 40 has literally been hell for me but determined to get past it all.
sending lots of love back xx
