My mum has recently passed and I’m looking for answers re: BRCA testing

Hi All,

I’ve just turned 40, 3 months ago I sat with my 66 year old mother and watched her die right in front of me of metastatic breast cancer. She was mis-diagnosed at 38 and then re-diagnosed at 39 with breast cancer. She had all the surgeries and every treatment under the sun. She was told after 6 years that she was in remission. At 55 she found out it had never fully gone and was in her bones, liver, spine, lungs and eventually fluid around her organs.  They tried for years to keep it under control but her little body just wasn’t strong enough to keep up with the treatments. It was excruciating to watch and she was in so much pain, the doctors told us she had 6 weeks to live but she only lived another 6 days. She died 8 days before her 67th birthday.

I contacted the NHS a month after her death and asked if I could have more regular mammograms and be tested for the BRCA gene. I was sent a family history form which I completed (I have quite a high rate of cancer in my family: mother, grandmother, mothers cousin, fathers sister, father) I have been referred to a genetics clinic by my doctor but have not heard anything for over a month.

Will they take this seriously? I feel like they think I’m too young. I get regular lumpy breasts but have been told these are just fibrous.

How long will it take for me to get an appointment for the gene testing? Has anyone else in their 30s/age 40 been through this?

Thanks
